Locomotive startup

We were at the railroad museum in Duluth when our boys were small and we got to go for a ride. The engineer offered the boys a chance to run the throttle, they declined, but I didn't! Lots of power there when you give it a little throttle!

We used EMD's to power our electric drilling rigs in the Middle East. Nothing like the sound of the air starter firing up an EMD and the sound of EMD's revving up every time I stepped on the pedal pulling pipe.

Nope . Get close with another locomotive, then get out LONG HEAVY duty
jumper cables. In one scene they show the guy closing a big knife switch.
Thats where you jump from/to. The cables have welding electrode holders on each end
so they clamp very nicely to the big knife switch. When you hook up the last
cable, you hold you arm over your face in case there is a flash,
like when you put positive to negative. Then hit the starter.
When you hit the starter, those jump. The cables probably as big as
your index finger. I can't remember for sure, but they run 36 or 48
volts to the starter.

They used jumper cables to jump the tracks to get traffic signals to come on. Way back when on Halloween, guys would wedge a piece of iron rod or something in between the tracks to turn the signals on. This is small town rarely used tracks down by the elevator.

I assume they have a better system nowadays.
