I got to thinking while eating breakfast

This morning I had a egg, slice of sausage, two pieces of cinnamon raison toast & a glass of milk. That involved a poultry farmer (egg) A pork producer (sausage) A grain farmer (flour for bread) A fruit grower (raisons) A dairy farmer (milk & butter) Someone had to harvest & process the cinnamon & lets not forget the trucker that hauled this produce to market & then to the grocery store.

Amen. So many people dont realize just how many jobs that one meal provides.Or the billions of dollars it contributes to our economy.Eat hearty! Bon Appetite!

Agriculture was once thought of as a bunch of country hicks with some animals, some tools, and dirty clothes. The industry has developed way beyond that. Literally to the point of high-tech. The agronomy and animal husbandry involved now is amazing. The genetics has propelled us beyond anything our fathers would have guessed at. If you factor in the logistics and production, medicine, and support the industry as a whole is expansive. Think of a convenience store. Stop and look at all the items on the shelves and notice how many have an agricultural link. My brother recently retired. He worked as a food chemist for a handful of companies, but one instance sticks in my mind. During his Pillsbury days he was on the team that developed Toaster Streudel. That required market research and he came to understand that the majority of the buying public doesnt see beyond the store shelves. That box with 6 prepackaged treats involved many hands of agriculture at many levels and started before any seed was put in the ground.

Anybody can be a farmer havent you heard the news . People stuff their face 24x7 with cheap food but hate farmers

Lets not forget the salt. It is hard to find items in a grocery store that dont contain salt. And impossible in a convenient store.

Yeah, Mike B is a dope. He couldnt teach it because he doesnt know the first thing about it. Set him in western NY and see how he does. We have something similar in Rocks and Cows.

Probably true of most any product in a store these days, food is the one thing a person can cut out most all the middle men and raise oneself if so inclined.
When I butcher a deer or beef myself it cuts out a lot of people in the food processing business, same as when I grow my own vegetables and fruits.Anyone with a little land can produce a lot of their own food.

SV .... "people hate farmers"? Hmmm, I didn't know that ...... there's a lot of hate then in this world I guess. I've seen a lot of it right here on the YT site for politicians, teachers, lawyers, union workers, immigrants, long hairs, environmentalists, climatologists, auto dealers, tradesmen, and kids that dress different or have an iPhone .... the list goes on and on but the farmer hate thing is something I don't think I've seen here.

I kinda agree with sv. When the townnies find out how much govt. money the farmer (me) gets and then they see us driving around in our shiny new tractors and pickups while they can hardly afford to pay the rent, yes, they get a bad taste in their mouth.

Some older Farmers around me have switched over from fruits and vegetables to corn and soybeans here in Michigan. Other Farmers have sold out and retired. Lots of "Hobby Farms" around though selling to restaurants and local Farmers Markets.....

Just a little clarification., Last year I got coroona payment china trade disruption payment fsa payment stimulas payment and then another depressed market payment. All from the govt. tax payer. I had my best year farming ever and all I had to do was walk out to the mailbox.vv

I read this again because I joined in. Who in this conversation said People hate farmers?

Do you want to know why that is ? All these people want to me how to do our job yet they have never even seen farm other than on some stupid documentary or aspca commercial. Dont want subsides? Triple the price of food and there wont need to be any

I'm not arguing about your economics analysis SV, but hate is a pretty strong word ..... well in my little world it is. I think you might be painting yourself as a victim by imagining people hate you because you are a farmer (which I am assuming you are by your replies). I guess for you that frustration leads to anger and eventually hate, that's too bad.

Most of the stuff I've seen indicates farmers are held in pretty high regard by most of the general public compared to other professions.

Where do you get all that from? You live in a rural area,I farm in a suburban area many would call urban and I don't get that at all from the people that live around me.Most people really don't give other people's occupation much thought one way or the other and why should they? Farming is no different from any other occupation you get paid to do a job or produce a product and if you don't like it or not satisfied with things then its time to make a change maybe.

I agree that many different farms and jobs in processing, shipping and retail were created in the production and possibly the preparation of your breakfast. Just like many other things we use daily . Think how much effort goes into the production of the steel in a car, or car parts. All parts of our complex lives that we are introduced to at birth, and take for granted. Almost seems many feel entitled to. We are a wealthy society and very fortunate. Most cant began to appreciate their good fortune.

I had two eggs ground pork with tender quick and pepper and garlic toast and coffee. The coffee and bread are the only thing that didn't come from the farm.

No joke, had venison, eggs, and coffee. Got it all myself besides the coffee. Yes, city folks typically look down on farmers. Unless they are some sort of organic farmer that supplies the local trendy restaurants- those guys are fricken heroes.

Didn't a politician, formerly a senator, now doing something else, who put us all in our place?

As Mr Dangerfield usta say, "I don't get no respect!"

I live very rural and do many things to be self sufficient. You claim people hate farmers and then you call them citiots. This being a farmer and feeding the world thing is BS. I know a few big farmers and I don't believe one of them gets up in morning and says I'm going out to feed the world. There are many cogs in this wheel, You can produce all produce you want but, you need people to provide roads, trucks, processing, sales, distribution and countless other jobs, and then people to buy your produce, so why are you pizzing on your customers?

(quoted from post at 09:32:21 03/13/21) Agriculture was once thought of as a bunch of country hicks with some animals, some tools, and dirty clothes.

There is still a few of those around. Working on my two tractors keeps the washing machine going all the time.

I do know a few farmers with their shiny new lease tractors with air conditioned cabs that let the dealer do all their repairs who never seem to get dirty.
