Need help with wiring!

I'm trying to get things in working order on my Allis Chalmers 5040 tractor, when i went to wire the new fuel gauge i found out the key switch has no fire going to it, one wire (off the key switch) goes to the starter switch on the dash and the other wire goes down to the safety start switch on top of the tranny cover. The safety switch's other wire goes to the starter solenoid. What i am wondering is, how do you know if the safety start switch is bad? I had considered by passing it, i am the only one that operates the tractor and I always take it out of gear before cranking. The previous owner told me that it was cranking good and when he went to start it nothing happened. I've been starting it at the starter solenoid.

I'm sorry in advance, I can do simple wiring jobs but this is a little out of my comfort zone, i've looked at the wiring diagram but that hasn't helped much so far.

Nothing wrong with bypassing the safety switch for testing purposes. Just make sure it's out of gear first & don't leave it unhooked.

Get a simple Volt ohmmeter and then you can check for power on both sides of switches And Whether or not the switches are closing or if they are bad . You cant succeed on any wiring job until you do

If you don't have power to the switches ahead of the neutral switch, it is not likely the neutral switch is bad.

Look for a broken wire, heat discolored, corroded connection feeding the ignition switch, typically the battery feeds the amp meter, from there power goes to the ignition switch.

Sorry, but going to be a little direct here. If you cant follow the wiring diagram and translate that into what needs to be done to repair the electrical problem on your tractor you need to find a friend who has that ability to help you or pay a trained or experienced person to help you. I suppose what causes me to be so stern is that you can easily mess up more stuff than you correct in short order if you dont understand an electrical system. In general a key switch has a source of power to it and when you turn the key on the power is connected to multiple things like the starter button, the instruments, the heater and AC if you have a cab and other items. If you can not figure out the source of the power to the key switch through your wiring diagram in my opinion you plain and simple need help.

I will suggest some light reading . Electrical systems are a little scary at first but nothing you cant handle
