No two stage clutch.

I bought a Massey ferguson to 35. I was told it had live power and a two stage clutch. It was so cold out when I bought it that the three point hitch would not go down.
So I just drove it around a bit and bought it. Well, I just put a three point scoop on it and went to get a load of sand. As soon as I touch the clutch, the load
drops. I would assume either the second clutch is not working or I don't have one. If it has one, ( which I doubt ) Is there a way to adjust it to work properly? thank
you. The serial number is SGF 199439

I don't know about the 35 but on the 30 it will drop if you push the clutch too far so the PTO clutch releases. I used a 30 drilling post holes once and there was no "feel" between the drive and PTO clutches. Could be the clutch isn't properly adjusted.

I think the statement about the 3 point of a tractor with live hydraulics not being affected by the clutch may not apply to some early Massey Fergusons. We had a 65 on the farm and I am pretty sure the hydraulics stop when you disengaged the two stage clutch to stop the PTO. I am also pretty sure it depended on where the 3pt lever was set as to when it would drop the 3 point when you stopped the pump. Almost seemed like it may have had something to do with the position of one of the two auxiliary valve levers. Anyway start up tractor and engage PTO. Somewhere in the 2-4 inches from clear down range the PTO should turn. Should from that point still be able to shift the trans into gear and raise clutch up more and put tractor in motion. Hopefully a true Massey expert will chime to confirm and give more info.

A Massey two stage clutch can be adjusted in such a way that any depression of the pedal releases both clutches. I am not sure if the 35 has the two stage clutch

The SGF of the serial number indicates S= normal width, G= gas, F= single clutch. So you would need to use a overrun clutch when using a mower, shredder, etc on the pto, in otherwords it acts just like a old 8n. You also loose the hydraulics when depressing the clutch since the hydraulic pump is run off the transmission. Since the 3 point drops rapidly with a load on the lift cylinder more than likely needs new seals.

FWI: When looking at a Ferguson, or Massey Ferguson serial numbers with the letter prefix, look for the letter M (for example SGM 123456) which indicates a dual clutch.

If it were a 2 stage, adjusted properly, you can partially depress the clutch and stop the transmission, but the PTO and hydraulic pump still stay engaged until the pedal is fully depressed, which will stop everything.

Chances are it is a single stage, by the prefix.

But it should not drop rapidly. Creep down is normal, but not drop.

You can open the round covers below the seat, raise the lift with a load, look in with a flashlight. !!!BUT DO NOT REACH IN THERE!!!

Oil raining down from the cylinder means the cylinder or the seals are bad. It has iron seal rings that leak some, but should not stream.

There is also a standpipe that brings oil from the pump up to the cylinder. It has orings top and bottom. Top oring will rain down oil, bottom will boil up oil below the surface.

There is also a relief valve below the surface in the side of the pump. Known for the spring rusting away.

How is the action of the lift? Steady lift, even if slow because of the leak, is good. That means the pump is good. if it is slow and jerky, the pump valves are failing and will need to be repaired or a rebuilt pump installed.

Before going into this, you really need a shop manual. The position control is complex and fragile. Everything hangs off the bottom of the top cover, which has to come off to get to the cylinder to replace or seal it.

The top cover has a procedure to properly remove it. It is HEAVY, not a one person job without a hoist.

Those are known for collecting water in the transmission, it gets in around bad shifter boots and the top link boot under the seat. The link boot is best replaced while the top is off, even then it is a real bear of a job!

Originally those called for 90 weight GL1 mineral oil. That will work, but 15w40 diesel engine oil will do better in cold climates. 90 weight slows everything down. Do not use EP gear oil.

The Hydrulic pump is a piston pump on the bottom of the transmission case in the pto drive line just in front of the shifter coupling for the pto shifter. A MF 35 without a two stage clutch doesnt have live Hydrulics unless it has a front pump.

A lot of people confuse live hydraulics with live pto - and vice versa.
On a tractor with live hyds the hydraulic function is 100% unrelated to clutch function - whether or not you have live pto.

PTfarmer ,do you have a email I can email .I have a question about a 135 governor issue . I read something you had posted long ago doing some
research of this subject and Im pretty sure you can tell me whats going on with mine,.
Thank you
