Oliver 88 distributor

I noticed this today, probably doesnt matter, but just seemed
odd. I am switching engines in my 88 and noticed that the
stud on the distributor is facing away from the block on one of
them and the other one it is facing the block. I guess all of
them that I paid any attention to were facing away from the
block.

I would not want the stud facing the block, I would be worried about a possible short to the block. I would loosen the clamp, spin the distributor and move the wires to get the timing correct.

(quoted from post at 17:55:52 03/05/21) And why wont it??? Bet it does . U guys dont know your
tractors.

In the previous picture there was no evidence of a coil. It appeared to have the 12V source connected to the ballast resistor and the ballast resistor then connected to the distributor. That will not run.

Now, you have added a picture of a different engine, paint is different, different oil filter, different wires, etc. I see no evidence of a ballast resistor on that engine either.

If there is in fact a coil on the previous picture, it is still wired wrong. The ballast resistor should be connected before the coil not between the coil and the distributor.

that is my 88 and it is the way it came out. there was no resistor. and that is where the coil goes, i added this picture to show how it
should be. and mine is factory 6 volt system .

Yes, that looks like it would be original. I thought it probably was when I first saw the picture.

No, there usually aren't resistors on 6V systems.

Do you agree that the other one is wired wrong? I expect it is a 12V conversion.
