TO20 Piston Identification

I thought I would post this here since the Harry Ferguson forum only returned 2 responses. It is concerning the 1950 TO20 I am rebuilding:

I was really confused after cleaning off the piston tops. All I notice is the direction indicator and the letter "P" stamped into the top. I was expecting "STD" or something like a number indicating a over sized piston. What does the "P" stand for?

The ice, snow, and lack of electricity in South Central Kentucky have put a damper on the teardown process.

dont think the p amounts to much. get your measuring tools out and measure the bore. not hard to do.

and one more thing,... if those are replaceable sleeve's in that engine why would you expect oversize pistons?

It was comone to put in overbore kits during a rebuild. People were always trying to get a couple more horsepower.

Original TO-20 has a Continental Z-120, 3 3/16" bore. It has wet sleeves, meaning the outside of the sleeve is in direct contact with the coolant. The sleeves are easy to remove and install, so that's the way most overhauls are done. The sleeve kits are 3 5/16" bore, the same as the Z-129 used in the TO-30. You don't have to bore the block - the replacement sleeves just have a thinner wall. I've never seen an oversize piston for either the Z-120 or Z-129. To rebuild or overhaul, you find a set of 3 3/16" rings or 3 5/16" rings if you don't want to pull the sleeves, or get a complete kit. This site has overhaul kits; I did a major overhaul on my TO-20, using YT parts, and had excellent results.

I think its fairly obvious that P stands for piston. How else would you know what it is.

Really I have no idea, but couldnt resist the irony.

Im just north of you around Georgetown. Hope youre staying warm down there.

(quoted from post at 01:17:07 03/01/22) how do you post a forum sry to bother u
Drew welcome to YT! Sometimes the two views of this forum have trouble syncing when an older post is replied to as you did. If you are viewing this on Modern look up above in the ..Tractor Talk.. section my reply with posting info is up there broke out by itself with the ..TO piston ID.. title.
