I disked my orchard today. Seams the weeds grew up over night. How long will a weed seed stay in the ground, and grow into a plant? Stan

Depends on the weed. I've seen velvet leaf grow where a porch had been torn down. Porch had been there well over 50 years.

not only weeds. wild oats will stay in the ground forever and just grow when ever it wants. i have heard one oat seed is good for seven years but i am sure its longer than that.

Years ago dad planted a grass hay field and got a perfect stand of clover over most of the field. There had not been clover grown there for 20 years or more. Tom

We tore a house down in the fall a couple years ago that had been standing for roughly 80 years. The next spring clover came up thick in the spot where the house was. No seed of any kind was sown. Where did the clover come from? I don't have a clue.

Penn State Ag did a study back when. Seems millions of seeds are in the ground and only need a flash of sunlight to germinate. They had a tent cover over their cultivators and got a lot less weeds after cultivation "in the dark". By dumb luck, I used to cultivate corn after dark ,since I baled hay all day, and had clean corn.

I own the farm that belonged to my Grandfather. In the Mid 1950's the Government had a program called the Soil Bank. Grandad put the farm in it and seeded it down to Sweet Clover. It came out of the program in the late 60's and has been cropped every since. I put the farm in CRP in 2016. Before the seeding was established, I had sweet clover coming up all over the farm that I never planted.

This just begs the question "Why buy "seed free" straw for mulch or bedding?" It is just an urban myth.
