Backup generation

I have the equipment (tractor, 25KW generator) but I do NOT have enough gasoline to run that long.

"For want of a nail ........."

If a LP standby generator counts, then yes. It exercises itself every Friday morning at 8:00 am. Per instructions I change oil once per year. The way it is designed no wrenches are needed. It even came with a oil drain pan. Easy does it!

Kubota Diesel generator, usually 15-20 gallons of fuel in cans plus what in all the
tractors and the dually

I know you have bad thought of them but I have a 20 KW GENRAC LP that has served me flawless for over 5 years now. Has the automatic transfer switch and we have a 1000 gal lp tank so always ready when the power goes out. Have had one 3+ day outage that it ran the whole time. I think it is showing 370 something hours now.

I got several years out of mine.

It ran fine when it ran, but I had warranty issues and did not want to fix it.

I have too much right now.

20KW autostart with 400-800 gallons of propane
20KW PTO, 2 tractors and 150 gallons of diesel
12KW gasoline, pull start with 10 gallons of gas

I will probably sell my PTO one, works would take 500 for it.

Darn. Distance is always an issue. I'd take that PTO one for my neighbor. I have a PTO 15/25 and lots of tractors and fuel. Looking for a similar size one for my neighbor.

I have an off grid solar system and haven't been hooped to the grid in 2+ years, also runs mini split heat pumps that provide 2/3 of the heat for the house.

Propane powered 20KW Kohler whole house back-up genset with auto transfer switch. Genset has cold weather package and fresh battery.

Two 500 gallon propane tanks used only for hot water heat boiler and genset. At lease one is always nearly full. Never buy propane in winter.

7.5KW (running) HF back-up for the back-up genset and usually 25-30 gallons of fresh gasoline.

So far so good but things are changing rapidly so not certain if such will suffice rest of life.

Dean

Good man, you are prepared.

I have same genset, but have not installed cold weather kit, that is on list.

Too many people are flat out un prepared.

Dual fuel 9000W genny (gas/LP) with 300 gal propane and 100 gallons of gas. Used it during the fires in September for 4 days. So far we haven't needed it this winter.

I have an 8.6 ready to go. I normally keep the gas tank full and change the gas every year, and get extra gas only when the forecast makes it look like I should. I picked an extra 5 gallons up two weeks ago and now it is on hand.

I think I'm good for a bit.....got gas, diesel and solar backups.

I can't wait to show y'all my next project.

35kw PTO generator that is set up on a transfer switch. Can run the whole farm with that. Always try to keep 250 gallons of diesel fuel on hand, as well as some gasoline too. Have a 8500w gas generator for my parents place with a transfer switch there too. For my brother across the road from me I have a 5500w generator, but he has to run extension cords. He is planning to put in a transfer switch in the near future to eliminate the need for running the cords.

5000W generator, extension cords, and 20 gallons of gas in cans that get cycled through the pickup to keep fresh. Figure it's better than nothing.

40kw pole switch, will run dairy barn and house.

I've been VERY Lucky. The only time I was without out power for an extended period of time, 2 weeks, was in the spring of 2011, 90 mph straight line winds put trees on powerlines, Looked like a warzone.

I have a backup house instead of backup generator. George

My son and I each bought Cummins 20KW natural gas units and auto switch units. We installed them ourselves. Mine cycles for 10 minutes every Tuesday at 4pm. I have had several outages in the past 14 months. Longest was about 9 hours.

One new 20KW lp fired Kohler. A 1000 and a 500 gal tank full used only for gen. Have a 25 Kato lite PTO no one seems to want to pay what I think it I worth so it is back up to the new one. Several tractors that can handle the Kato and 500 gal of diesel on hand. No worries. Swede

Have two portable stand alone generators, each capable of providing minimal requirements for civilization. Several containers of fresh fuel. Can probably last a week.

We have a 10KW diesel powered stand by set. Uses less than a quart an hour under average loadings. Have 250 gallons of #2 in the farm tank so I guess we can generate for 1000 hours give or take.

What brand and model of electrical breaker panel ?
Some are low cost to add a sliding interlock to control and generator breaker and the main breaker .
Open doors or open windows while operating a generator will too often allow CO into the structure . The residents wake up to find themselves dead .

I am better equipped to deal with a power outage in the summer than winter.

I have a portable generator with a 30 amp plug.
Think it is 5500 watts.
It will run any one item in my house other than the heat pump.
To replace the heat pump I have a window A/C in my living room that the generator will run and a 9000 BTU propane heater.
The problem comes in with the heat pump not running keeping the water lines running in the winter.

So while I have gone over a month (more like 6 weeks) without electricity in the summer I would be in real trouble if the electricity was off today when we never got above freezing for the first time in at least 30 years.

With all of that in mind I can not justify a whole house generator to insure against a once in a life time catastrophe or a luxury item I will use once every 10 to 20 years.

The only thing I want to do to upgrade my system is change my portable generator over to propane so I do not have to be dependent on a 5 gallon gas can.

Yes I got tired of buying 100 gals of gas for events that was the end all (Hurricanes). I converted a gen to NG and still have a 8500/12500 gas generator. I have not needed a gen but for only a few hours since I converted my gen to NG...

Simple. shut the well pump off, drain the lines, open the freezer door in the shop, give the food in the fridge to the cats and check into the Holiday Inn in Mitchell.

It looks like we have a well prepared group here.

I would not want to live rural without backup, residential is quite rare on outages, but they do happen.

Miller welder with Kubota diesel and plenty of fuel for it. The generator side of it is about 8000 w will run house if I start one item at a time and let run till stopped then add another. Or can not run all of it if I don't want to. I do limit the number of lights on at a time and some of those things if all is on.

Yes a 5500 gasoline generator. Won't run our heat pump but will run the lp backup and rest of the house. Started it day before yesterday to see if it worked before big snow storm. Have 3 cans of.gas by it. And 500 gal gas tank has some in it also. Plus a 900 watt HF tailgater to run little things. Like charge batteries far from electric.

Summer plan. Put up bug proof tent next to flow back hydrant. . Put the coleman lanterns and stoves in. Army cot and a blanket. pillow, Cel phone to order out, Cooler for ice, Jack and Coke. Books from Goodwill. Reefer food to cats. (Usually too green for them LOL) Chill.

Miller welder, just need to plug it in an flip the switch out at the pole. Know it runs, was welding on Monday. Need to switch to oil heat backup, and we cant run the oven and water heater at the same time but we manage.

Downfall is I dont have that much gas on hand, but I do know someone that has a nice big tankful.

I have a permanently installed 20 Es series, 20 Kw Onan natural gas unit for the outages that we do have a very few times a year. I usually turn off things not needed to keep down the load demand. I use a manual transfer switch because when I bought this unit used the auto-transfer switch was only rated @ 125 amp and local electric code says the transfer switch has to be equal to the entrance panel rating. I already had a manual 200 amp transfer switch in the line that I have used for the last 30 yrs with the 8 Kw Dayton unit I had. I replaced the battery this morning because it was stuttering when trying to crank a day or so ago when I tested it and now it is ready to use. I like the natural gas setup, no getting cold or wet to refuel a gasoline powered unit.

Not many outages here (SW Washington), so we don't have anything elaborate. Just a 2000 watt generator, with which we can keep the refer and 2 freezers cold. Wood stove in the house, water pressure tank is uphill from the house so it will work with gravity if no power. Coleman camp stove. And if all else fails, we can decamp to the motor home.

6500Watt Honda liquid cooled generator. Has saved about bacon quite a few times for up to 7 days without power as long as I can get gas. Usually keep 15 gallons on hand that lasts about 3 days depending on time of year.

Vito

Wow,, funny how a few cold days and no power has few talking about the wonders of solar and wind generated power,, here are just a few of the thousands of these eye sores being buried from other States in my State,, why from other States you ask,, well Those States DO NOT want them buried where they live,, but ya know out in Wyoming there are so few people so its all good to send them there, whole thing is a sick joke,, oh by the way I have two generators, one a 45KW pto and a small portable, we have a very left sided paper,, I see they used pics from last year in the story,, I am sure the ones I seen a few days ago which have been removed from the web showing 20 times this many waiting to be cut up and buried and the dozens and dozens of acres in the landfill already used just to put these worthless blades in,,

(quoted from post at 08:29:45 02/17/21) 8750 Harbor Fright Gen on LPG put tank on and good to go will run well over a week on a 30 lb. tank

Hello. Just wondering what parts did you get to convert the generator over to propane? Thanks.

(quoted from post at 18:58:59 02/16/21) Do you have long term 2-5 day backup generation plans.

Not much generation plan per se but...
House heated with propane units that don't require any electricity. And propane cooking stove so we can eat all we want.

I have a hand pump for the well so we can get all the water we need as long as we can move an arm up and down. I have a port in the laundry room so I can hook it up by the utility sink and we don't even have to leave the house to pump water.

I have an inverter that will run the fridge and the chest freezer. If I run one at a time the demand it low enough the alternators can handle it on my vehicles and/or tractor.

We don't loose power often, but we have occasionally for several days at a time. We've used all the above and been warm, cozy, and eating and drinking well even with no power in the middle of winter. And we keep the frozen food safe and secure summer or winter.

It works good enough though not perfect.

I don't worry too much about weather caused outages. I worry about the electric grid going down. And, it might not be caused by foreign terrorism. We got a bunch of nuts in this country.

Must be intermittent use if a 30lb tank lasts a week . That is 7.15 gallons of LP and the equivalent of 5.25 gallons of gasoline .

I think that if the tank has an OPD valve limiting it a 80% fill, that would be 30 x 8 - 24 divided by 4.2 lbs a gallon = 5.71 gallons. A 20 lb tank would get you about 20 x .8= 16 divided by 4.2 = 3.8 gallons.

Just looked at a utub video where a guy took a 2 burner valve setup off his gas grill, added to rubber hoses off the gas valves and stuck them into the air cleaner intake on a predator engine on a 4000 watt generator. Got it running just fine by adjusting the two burner valves. Plugged a load on the generator and then adjusted the burner valves to get 60 hertz and the proper voltage. Something to think about if you run out of gasoline.

Well I looked it up. You can buy conversion carbs and dual fuel carbs starting at 25 bux and up on Amazing. Have to look into that for the one I have.

should say we don't run it around the clock would say 20 to 25 hr per tank give or take depends what the load is

(quoted from post at 18:30:14 02/16/21) 200 KW Onan Generator. Hoping I don't need to start it when it is -10, though.
200KW?? powering the whole neighborhood? Did you mean 20KW? What model is it? I am pretty familiar with Onan's. zuhnc
