I have a D7 thats in need of a pony motor or a rebuild. I would appreciate a point in the right direction. Thanks in advance.

What makes you think it needs an overhaul? They don't run long enough to wear out hardly. Not much to them unless compression is way down might be just tune up and timing is all it needs to run good. They are not a purring type of engine like your other tractors. Not a rough running engine either.

You are going to have to know what D7 you have, like 3T, 17A, 7E ect. Plenty of them out there but
I am like the other poster unless you have a rod hanging out the side would be easier to fix yours..

you would be surprised at how many parts Cat has for these old machines---and a good source for old parts is Florin Tractor in Ca

Thanks for the replies . I believe its a 3T. I just got a D7 and a 1964 955H Loader and trying to get them in shape. I thought about converting but they were my Grandfathers and would like to
keep them original as possible. I've run the D7 its a stout machine its just every time I go to crank it the pony motor gives Me problems. It might just be the carburetor but by time I spend the
amount for a good carburetor I wanted to look ibto a rebuilt Pony motor are a direction to go.

These 2 cylinder starting engines need a good flow of fuel and hot spark. In good running order, they'll start with the hand crank.

Clean the screen leading into the carb, make sure the fuel tank is not full of coffee grind rust particles and also make sure the sediment bowl screen is not restricted. The zenith carbs are not hard to clean. How is the spark from the magneto ? What kind of spark plugs and what plug wire type does it have, hopefully solid wire. There are a bunch of little things with these, if it has decent compression, should run.

Use care with these, always and I mean always check the oil level and condition, they can easily fill up with fuel and thin the oil,so much the fuel will run out the dipstick tube, best to run it out, shut the fuel valve off. Regular oil changes won't hurt either, I used to carefully extract it with a drill pump and small diameter hose, by removing the side inspection cover. The sump drain plug is a pain to get to. I used care to clean around the area so as to not allow any dirt into the sump.

Also be aware that without the diesel spinning, no coolant is circulating, the diesel must be engaged soon after the starting engine fires up. One last thing is be aware of over speeding these when the diesel fires up, there is an adjustment on the pinion to set when it kicks out. I used to keep my hand on the throttle linkage and slow it down as soon as the diesel fires.

Yes Sir. I try to keep up with it on a everytime use. I dont use it that much other than when someone ask about it and people have never seen how a pony motor work. I put a new magneto on It. Thanks for the reply.

I don't know about the pony motor, but for general CAT parts I'd recommend American Crane and Tractor out of Kansas City.

When I was helping a friend in Iceland get parts for his 3206 Track-Hoe, we were able to find them here and often at a fraction of the price of the original parts. They sell both aftermarket and OEM.

My contact there was Brita McCracken. Very good service, they help customers of all shapes and sizes.
