I agree. There's something extra under the left hopper. Maybe to hold a drive wheel? AC had a model which was driven off a sprocket mounted on the tractor rear wheel.
Are those hoppers seed, or fertilizer? There's a couple of unused sprockets on the shaft. I see no provision for changing settings. Usually there would be several sprockets.

I also say it's for fertilizing something. Those look like fertilizer boxes to me. And what I can see of the bottom looks similar to the fertilizer boxes on one of my planters.

It’s a Kelly planter on a Ferguson bedder frame . Sold by Ford and Ferguson Dealers Can’t remember bedder number but I have one .It’s for planting seed. We used it for cotton, milo, soybeans. I still use it to plant my garden. In first picture the rod hooks in bracket on fender to make it go in gear when lowering and takes out gear when raised at end field. Has sprocket on rear wheel to drive planter. Never seen one with fertilizer hoppers. Also some used Ferguson cultivator to mount hopper on which is what I have. You could get different plates to plant anything. Very good planter.

Openers like that don’t work in the soil around here, wet heavy clay in southern MN.

I believe stuff like that works in dry sand soils?

It does look more like a fertilizer spreader, but I suppose it is a planter.

Are those cast weights on the closing wheels? Interesting.

So my questions....

All planters need to drive the shaft. Looks like a sprocket on the left side of the planter shaft. What actually drives it, a sprocket on the tractor axle, or is there a depth gauge wheel, or what?

Then, all planters need to change speeds for different planting rates. Somewhere needs to be 3 sprockets or gearsets to change speeds, anyhow commonly on planters I ever have seen.

I’m not sure I see that from the picture angles?
