New Tractor Prices

I was looking online at new tractor prices, 30-40 horsepower tractors are easily costing $1,000 per horsepower. I don't know if there ever is a good time to buy something new, but a cab tractor should would be nice for plowing snow during these Michigan winters....

Funny you post this. I have for some time wanted a tractor with a cab where everything works consistently. AC, heat, radio...not constantly needing repairs when I need it the most. I can keep a half dozen old tractors around here for the cost of one new one...usually ONE of them will work when I need it. LOL

I just did the same thing you did pricing the new ones out.

I know as I get older, I think about the new safety features the new tractors have, how much easier they are to get on and off with the open station platform, and yes, the comfort and dependability, especially on a cold winter day....

They surely are pricy these days. Dont know how anyone could pay for one...I bought a brand new JD 4040 in 1980. had all the 'bells and whistles....It cost 'just' $30,000.Lost it in '84. Replaced it with a 'rag' of an IH 856 that cost 3900.00.It did all the work(and more) on half the fuel.It just wasnt as nice to drive. If I were you,I would look for a good low houred used tractor that meets your needs. The 'older' the better. Less electronic(computer) and emission bu!!$#:t. And you wont have to mortgage the farm to pay for it.

I have about 20 tractors I use around the farm all but a couple cost me less than a new 3 HP tractor would cost me at the prices you quoted.I can sure do a lot
of work on my tractors for what my 98 HP tractor I paid $900 for would cost new.

That's great, good for you! My local JD Dealership does not offer much at all on a trade-in, so I really have to think about buying anything new.....

I don't remember what I paid for mine. I'm thinking it was under 100/hp. I was surprised how much my CPA was able to deduct from my taxes.

I'm hoping for a SNOW this year so I get some tractor therapy.

I told my kids I was spending their inheritance.

My son has expressed an interest in the Jubilee and Kubota after I'm gone. I father can't hope for anything more than to pass his tools to his kids.

My 50 HP Kubota with loader I bought used a little over a year ago cost me less than $100 per HP.
$4500.
Ain't no way I will ever buy new.

My tractor is a huge tax savings for me this year, I sold by business and used some of that cash for expanded farming.

We didn't have hardly any snow here until this month! I know as I get older, my knees hurt more, especially if I am working a clutch on a tractor.....

I never had a cab until last year. Bought a 100 hp Kubota. figured at nearly 60 years old, there wasn't much sense in waiting, because my time to enjoy it is going on by. Since I farm a little produce it is a tax deduction, and between the extra productivity and comfort, plus a few custom haying jobs, I think it will earn its keep. But of course I bought it with someone else's money...so now I have to keep farming! It was gently used and cost less than $50 per hp, so about half of a new one.

A $1.00 in 1971 would be worth $6.55 today. An air conditioned cab adds around $20,000 or more regardless of how big or small the tractor is.

I bought this tractor new in June of 2014

This is said to be a 135hp tractor. I paid $119,000.00 Canadian dollars for this tractor as it stands in the picture with Deluxe cab and loader 4wd. I now have just over 2400 hours on the clock. Tractor works great only had to spend $ on maintenance, and use it all year around.. I have one more much like it and two years newer, but I also have 5 tractors that are over 50 years old that get a lot of work during spring , summer and fall. The cost per hp isn’t a very accurate way to measure the cost of owning a tractor. The true measure is how much can you earn and profit from owning the tractor. Also will you be able to keep working longer if you have dust free air conditioning/heated cab. Or will you quit working sooner because you can no longer handle the stress of working in the elements. If you can afford and want a newer tractor with a cab, and can save on income taxes by buying it also, you would be crazy to go without, just so you can send more $$ into the government

That's really a nice tractor, congratulations on your purchase! What you say makes good sense, something to think about for sure. Thank you!

These JD compact tractors are really pricey. I was looking at a 4052R tractor, mfwd, hydrostatic transmission, 40 pto horsepower, base price begins at $36,699. Add the cab for $9,000 and the loader for another $7,500, and you're over $53,000 for 52 horsepower tractor.

Not so on the KUBOTA some where around 8 to 12 grand but nothing like 20 thousand . however ever year the open to cab ratio changes . In the over 50 hp now about 74 percent are now cab and going up about 5 percent ever year.

bought this 75 hp tractor its a 2018 had 200 hrs on it for 38k out of texas no tax 1800 to ship to wash state

I bought Massey 1635 in 2018 with 250 hours for $23k with warranty extended to 3 years or 600 hours. 35HP cab air heat third valve weights and fluid in tires. Quick tach loader. I see several similar priced tractors any color but green on tractor house. It has been a great tractor for me, sure I'd like another 20HP at times but happy with it.

In 2010 my wife bought me a John Deere 4320 compact tractor loader with cab air and heat I would not go back to an open station. It was worth every penny don't know what she paid but my skid steer and Food 5000 went away. cab makes plowing snow fun. Go for it you can't take it with you. Randy

Sounds like you will get your snow in a few days. Sayimg 12 inches in the south part of the state and less north.

I would look for a tractor that doesn’t have the DEF stuff on it, that is a very expensive complexity that is miserable on a utility type tractor. It was designed with long haul trucking or 16 hours of tillage in mind, not the off and on short use, half throttle type jobs of a utility tractor around the yard.

I’m not sure the different years that junk was phased into different sized Diesel engines.
