Thanks! I did do some research on it after I found out what it was. In all the years on the farm I had never come across it before. Been a lot of learning opportunities this year. Lol.
 
Hopefully next year the learning will be less ! Learning is usually another way to say heartache .
 
My cows were grass feed only, cows were not designed to eat grain, they were designed to eat forage.

Well i dont agree totally, ear corn is mothers natures perfect feed, for fating cattle,the cob keeps the rumen working,pretty good,but i always feed prairie hay with ground ear,with sodium bicarbonate [baking soda] never got docked sold grade and yield!
 
I agree, feed some grain, but allow hay, grass. Cows should not be finished on grain, corn only.
 
Salt is also important to a healthy rumen, and often overlooked during the winter months when it is really more critical.
 
I would not say corn is mothers natures perfect feed.
Nothing eats corn and soy naturally.
We just feed corn and soy because it is a cheap supplement that produces desired results in a shorter time.

We feed grain to dogs and cats because it is cheap.
We feed grain to horses so we can work them harder.
We feed grain to milk cows so they will produce way more milk than their body can handle.
We feed grain to cows; pigs and chickens to get them to market faster.
Notice none of these say because it is better for the animal.

The problem comes in when we over feed corn to cows.
We see corn in the manure so we feel the cow is not digesting all of the corn.
So we grind the corn.
This just causes the corn to ferment quicker and the rumen stops working properly.
And the real problem was we were over feeding the corn.

It is a proven fact that cows will have digestive problems like founder and acidosis if corn is not managed properly.
And grinding the corn just makes the problem worse.
A cow will never have digestive problem on their natural food "Grass".

Disclaimer: I love my corn fed beef.
 
Right here corn does not really do well enough to raise, to dry and shorter growing season,, I have been growing Haybet forage Hay Barley for over 25 years now and have also added growing a forage winter wheat, both developed for Cattle feed, I also grow some millet for Moo food,, they do very well on it all,, far as I know zero problems with acidosis,, I also know how to keep the nitrates at a very low level when producing it,, Oats and corn can get it with high enough amounts to kill though, one reason I never grew oats for forage feeding, both teh hay barley and willow creek winter wheat I grow are also beardless grains,, which stops the lump jaw that can occur

this is Hay Barley,, this grew and made just over 1 ton per acre on less than three inches of liquid form September 2019 until these pics were taken 7-2020, I average 2 tons per acre but can reach three tons a acre with more H20
 
Around here all the wild critters eat corn. Cut a deer open and its full of corn and even beans.
 
John, you took my thunder,I was going to say if you like beef that's not corn feed, go for it! But you say nothing it's corn naturally,well every cow i ever seen loves corn, and corn is a grass,they will eat it when it's 12 inches tall, and they love it in the fall,when they can graze it after the combine, you hardly need a fence ! But seriously i use to feed cattle, and sold to IBP at the time, in Laverne, Minnesota.Grade and yield, and sometimes Kosher Kill,.
 
I am anti corn squeezins as well . However most of us don’t only eat organic green salad raw fish and 3 servings of nuts a day .
 
That looks good . I made 2.4 ton to the acre with triticale last two year’s but we got some Timely rain the cattle love it
