O-ring type fitting leaking on truck power steering. Take it apart and o-ring is brittle and cracked. Here's the thing. It is kinda square shaped instead of round. Is that because it is
flattened through the years or do they make an actual square o-ring?

(quoted from post at 10:32:16 02/03/21) Yes, it's usually called a quad ring.

Or, perhaps NOT.

"Quad ring" on left, "square-cut O-ring" on right.

Upon closer inspection I think the fitting maybe split. So I bought a new fitting. $6.07 It came with the o-ring already installed. New one is round.

Good to hear the new one fits perfectly.

Most o-rings on fittings are round. Quad rings tend to be in couplers and other uses where they need more corners to seal or a wider ring to seal. They also use teflon rings to back up o-rings to help take higher pressures .

I'd betcha they are round o-rings. I just rebuilt a power steering pump a month or two ago and my o-rings were squared off because they are old. The new ones were all round!
