2 row JD Planter

I'm looking for a small John Deere 2 or 4 row planter that I can display with my 1950 John Deere A. I'm restoring it for 4-h and wanted something to go on it. I was looking to find some #70 or #71 units but can't find any. Any recommendations is appreciated
Thanks
Vince

Curious, does your tractor have a three point?Or you useing a wheel mounted 'tool carrier? The 'tool carrier' would more 'period correct'.Better still to find a 290/490 or 294/494 pull behind. A 2 row would have been more common 'in the day',and a lot easier to haul than a wider 4 row.

Going out on a limb and assuming you are a high school student without an infinite supply of money! It varies geographically but your best bet is probably to chase JD290 trailed planters.

Years ago we had a John Deere 919L 2 row planter. The owners manual showed 3 configurations, a long tongue for horses, a short tongue for a tractor or 3 point hitch. We had the 3ph version. I think it was a late 1940s to early 1950s machine. We couldn't find plates for it by the 1970s and the fertilizer hoppers were small. The press wheels were larger than later planters.

You might keep an eye out at Mecum's spring auction. They sometimes have one on the auction that you won't have to completely rebuild. Remember that it is not what you pay but what you bring home. Tom

Like Delta said, Richard Muth has lots of 71's for sale and he's a pleasant guy to deal with. If you make a trip there plan on spending some time roaming around his yard - he's got acres of stuff to look at. I grew up just a few miles from there and whenever we're in that area to visit my parents I like to stop by Muth's and spend a few hours snooping around. My wife is probably glad that we live nearly 400 miles away to prevent even more stuff from there showing up at our place . . .

Deere made a two row lister/planter that was mounted but not 3-pt for the A,B,G tractors. It attached to the frame about midway between front and rear wheels and was raised/lowered by the rock shaft. My brother has one that he removed from a G he may sell. It was restored. I can find out. We are in central Kansas near 96 highway.

Now that's a sweet looking 246! Looks set for 30" rows. Had one on our 8N. Fill up the seed and fertilizer hoppers and put 2 bags on the tractor nose to hold the front end down on the way to the field! Steered mostly with brakes till we got it in the ground.

I think I'm going to go with a model 246. So if you know of one in Southern Wyoming, Colorado, or Western Nebraska please let me know

for a matching planter you want the 290 or the 490 those were the JD planters in 1950 you will need to come to the corn belt to find them 290s are easier to find as the 490s went for scrap those two models were in production till 1958 when the 490 was replaced with the 494

That looks nicer then it probably did when it was new. Great job on it. What is the small can in the middle of the Fert. and seed boxes for? I don't remember ever seeing that on a planter.

The little cone shaped can was the insecticide applicator and I think John Deere bought them from the Gandy Corp. The later planters used another set of the herbicide units and placed them ahead of the press wheels and you had a choice of applying with the seed or in a band over the row. Quite a job restoring one of those planters. If I remember correctly there is parts from four planters from four states in that one.

I found a 2 row 290 in SD, price I think sounds very reasonable
