Hatachi 12 v. Conversion failure

It was recommended here that Hatachi alternator 14231 was a good fit and a. 3 wire hook up. I ordered one for a Cub on line about $38.00 bucks. It would bury the amp meter at full rpms. It was charging at almost 17 volts. I called tech support and was told I needed a regulator for it to work. I gave up and installed a Delco. It is a tight fit but is under the hood. Has anyone had success with the Hatichi?

There is a built in regulator and a resister to keep the battery from feeding back to the alternator.

The alternator is a three (3) wire set up which can be converted to one (1) wire. There are spade connections labeled S & L and a BAT post connection. The L spade is for the idiot light and can be disregarded. Use a jumper wire from the S spade to the BAT post and you are good to go.

I've used this setup several times in the past. On a rebuilt, maybr you just got a wonky regulator. Mine were all from NAPA, not that it matters.

The Hitachi alternator should have the regulator built in.

You have the green and Black wires reversed on the edge plug on the Delco in the picture. If they were reversed on the Hitachi that might have contributed to faulty operation

I use a mini denso for all the 12v conversions that I do, and use the 3 wire hookup. They seem to work very well. Rated at 63 amp, ordered them online for about $40 each, no core charge.

"Yup It was backwards when I took the picture. It did not shut off. The Diode is under the wire wrap. Thanks for pointing it out before someone tried to copy it.

I've done a dozen or so Delco one wire conversions. The first almost 20 years ago.Excedingly simple to hookup. All have worked perfectly.I will never understand why folks insist on still useing the 'old' 3 wire systems.

I put a Hitachi on a forklift once.

It was the only one I could find small enough to fit.

This one had the power steering pump on back of the generator, so the generator had to stay, and the alternator went beside it. Very tight quarters!

It worked, but had to be revved to full governed speed to initiate the charge. Never understood why, it was the correct pulley ratio.

That is all I use now are the Hitachi 14231 alternators. I think they look much better for a 12 volt conversion and use use all 3-wire with a diode.
I just put one on my Case 311 and used the same mounts and had to get the wider pulley.
I wish I could them with a tach-drive for the Ford thousand series tractors.

I use them because they are small and fit without body work have no problems maybe yours charged that much cause the batt was down
