Just a mistak. Or something else

I was cutting fire wood. My chain saw started to miss. It needed gas. filled the saw with gas and oil. It failed to start. Everything I do is in a hurry. What happened, is I filled the gas tank with chain and bar oil, and filled the chain oil tank with gas. So at 78, was this just a simple mistake, or a senior brain failure? Sometimes I forget to install my tractor gas cap, and find it laying on the trailer floor, when I get to my mowing job, and everything thing back is covered with diesel. I don't forget to come in for lunch, or dinner yet. What do you think? Stan

Well, you remind me of myself.

The mixed bar oil and fuel happens a lot. We 'fix' that problem several times a year.

Take the bar oil cap off the saw. Put it on the bench Heat a small washer and place it on the cap. The heat will melt it in. O for oil.
Putting an F on the fuel tank might take a bit of copper wire. Just doing that will never let you forget the correct liquid. By the way people much younger than us do space cadet things. Jim

Could be worse, you didn't put straight gas in it! On my Jonsereds the oil fill is by the bar and smaller, the fuel fill is back by the carb, I haven't made that mistake yet, but I'm only 69!

I'm getting older too. Maybe I should move the Preparation H and Icy-Hot to separate shelves in the medicine cabinet.

My problem is forgetfulness.

Forgetting to close the garage door, zoning out and missing my exit, trying to remember what I did yesterday, or an hour ago.

Some days are better than others, and some are a real challenge. Loosing tools, dropping things, simple math...

All are getting worse at an alarming rate! Getting old is not fun anymore!

Just want you all to know that I been making these kinds of mistakes since I was 10 years old. And i been making these mistakes at about the same rate. These mistakes are just God's way of slowing me done just a tiny bit. Years ago, leaving the oil fill cap off the chain saw after filling it left me with a big splash of bar oil down the leg of my pants when I picked up the saw. The oil soaked right through the jeans, and got pretty cold on my leg until I could get home and change. I don't recall ever doing that again, but who knows, maybe I've done it a few more times and I just don't remember!

I getting to where I need a check list. It bothers me when I do stuff like that. But SWMBO reminds me that it’s not going to get better.

Trying to save steps
Going downstairs to get a roll of paper towels off the shelf
Might as well take the garbage out while Im going
Its an efficient way to save steps when you get old and tired
Took the garbage out,,,
Walked back upstairs
Wife says,,where's the paper towels?

Probably not a bad idea, but I would definately move the toothpaste far away from both of them!!!!

Anyone remember the commercial with the older lady who says; you're not getting older, you're getting better?? She Lied!!!!!

I know you don't want to hear it but it's time to slow down a little bit. The fact is we aren't as sharp as we used to be and hurrying only makes it worse.

Putting the gas in the wrong tank on a chainsaw isn't a minor thing when you have been running one for decades. It's a rookie mistake that would be hard for an experienced man to do. Just think about it a few minutes and you'll realize you can close your eyes and get the correct tank every time just from experience.

This old age stuff sure ain't what I thought it was going to be.

How about, install new $300 wiring harness going back to a v-bottom salt box mounted on a dump truck. Simple in and out. Hook it up and literally watch smoke come out of the control module in back. Cab smells of smoke. I looked RIGHT at the batteries and hooked the harness up reverse! $600 module and controller later it was fixed. I'm 58 and wondering if I'm losing it!

There is your problem. Hurrying is a sure way to get in trouble.

Try brushing your teeth using the tube of hand lotion instead of toothpaste! Yeah I'm pretty old, too. Leo

10 yrs ago when I was really young (68) started my portable air compressor (got it for free without shield over pullies) and noticed hose rubbing on pulley. Thinking about daily tasks to do as reached to move hose. Not keeping my mind on what I was doing resulted in losing half my right hand ring finger.

slow down and it won't happen as often, but it will still happen.

I have always been bad with not putting fuel caps back on just because I was in a hurry to get going again. Now I slow down and seems to happen alot less often.

started doing it at 16 years old and am only 48 now. last time I did it was 9 months ago but I remembered after 20 ft of driving as I started doing a mental recalculate what I did before I drive to far.IE did I hang up the hose, did I disconnect the cable from the battery, close the tap on fuel tank, and last did I cap the tractor tank.

I got too much on my mind and I do things like that.
My older uncle called me one day all upset.
He had put a quart of oil in the radiator on his 49 half ton Chevy PU.
I told him not to worry and drive it.
It would just lube the water pump.

My grandson one time put Preparation H on his toothbrush. He was spitting and sputtering but I told him its all good. At least his gums won't itch or bleed. (-:

I'm trying the think and nothing is happening.

Many years ago drove Nancy's 48A to the convenience store to fill the tank.

Started talking to a fellow and got distracted.

Filled the tank with diesel.

Carburetor had enough gas to start and made it back home.

Mowed the pasture as planned.

Drained the tank after shutting down.

I was in my early 40s then and it doesn't seem to be getting any better.

Maybe it's a reminder to all of us to keep our affairs in order, so someone doesn't have a mess to deal with when we're gone or no longer able to take care of them on our own.

BOY I STARTED EARLY IN MY EARLY 60S PUT GAS IN TRACTOR IN FTELD WHEN MOWING HAY LAST FALL STARTED CUTTING AGAIN SAW GAS CAP IN FIELD ON NEXT ROUND GEE I HAVE XTRA CAP TILL I LOOKED AT HOOD BOY WHAT A DUMMY ALSO GO TO TOOL BOX FOR SOMETHING HAVE TO STAND THER TRYING TO REMEMBER WHAT I CAME FOR DONT FEEL BAD BOYS WE ALL HAVE IT IN SOME FORM

I kind of worry about you, Chief. You have posted on here several times recently about making mistakes. I think your line about doing every thing in a hurry is the key. Slow down. I think I made more mistakes when I was younger and busier. I also do like Larry on the corner said trying to be efficient and save trips and forget stuff, which can be construed as hurrying I guess. LOL. Really, just slow down and think about the task at hand, before you start, even if you did a thousand times before. And recheck everything when you're done. Some mistakes cost time and some can hurt you. Be careful, please. Mark.

I have that. I say our brain is still working at warp speed but our body is not. What happens is, our mind has moved on to two or three other "things" while our body is still working on the first one. Thus, we forget what we are doing there. A short term memory problem. What?
