New User
Good evening all. I am new to YT and I got my hands on an International 300 Utility. So far I have not posted but I have gathered a good bit of information from YT. I am pretty new to fixing tractors but I have a very solid mechanical background.

I believe that my 300U was originally run off of propane? If it was, now it runs off of gas and someone modified an old propane tank into a gas tank with the sediment bowl on the bottom.

So far, I have had the pressure line on the hydraulics repaired (cut and swedged a new line), replaced gauges and start switch, and I am currently replacing all of the wiring.

I am not interested in making this tractor original and putting that kind of $$$ into it. I am just wanting it to be a reliable tractor for around the house.

If you guys have any wisdom you'd like to share, I would appreciate hearing it.

Thanks

I can answer 300U questions (350U owner) They are good tractors. If you put a loader on it be careful to move when turning. The steering gear boxes
(power or manual) were not terribly strong, so turning while moving eases the steering effort, and saves broken parts. Fun to have you on board. Jim

Run for your life.

(well, somebody had to say it.)

janicholson has been my "go to" guy on my 300U for years but you will find several others down on the IH board that can help you. There's a whole group of guys down there who have been helping me a lot. I have mine in the shop right now in the beginning phases of being split to replace the rear main. I have to take a winter hiatus for work. If I split it now and have to stop I will play heck remembering everything I did come April. Even with photos. Welcome.

Welcome. Someone on this board has done it, has one, or knows where to get one. No matter what it is. Stan

Thanks everyone. My 300U does not have a live PTO or the Torque Amplifier, HOWEVER, I also have a second 300U that is WAY beyond any attempt at restoration and it has the live PTO and TA on it. Would it be feasible to add that PTO system to mine or is that crazy thinking?

No and yes. No because the Yes is possible but much harder. The transmission and mid casting (with the TA in it, and the PTO are all) either one or
the other. So to do it as easily as possible take the two apart at the bell housing to engine. Roll the back half away. Change over tires and seats
or what ever is needed, and bolt it together. Use a new TA drive tube from the new clutch to the TA and PTO drive system. The other way (just to
have the original back 1/2 is way more work. Jim

Got it. Realistically, part out the one that is too far gone. I think that may be better in the long run because one working just fine is much better then two that don't work at all.

There is a lot of knowledge here and you will probably find answers to your questions however the best thing you can do to help yourself and the tractor is to get a set
of manuals. Owners, Repair or shop, and possibly even parts manual. the parts manual is helpful even if you don't use it to order parts, it shows how and in the order the
parts fit together. Reprint manuals are OK, they don't have to be original.

Yes. But there is no way to avoid the use of the middle frame housing with its Pressure plate driven hollow shaft and PTO drive gear components. Which are not built into the casting used with no live PTO and No TA. The TA delete shaft would need to be found and purchased, as well and may be both difficult to find, and expensive. TAs are fantastic. Those who disregard them or believe they fail are wrong. I have a TA in a 350U that is original. The tractor has had 12,000 hrs on it. The key is rapid shifting between direct and reduction and the other way as well. Treating the lever like a switch, never moving it slowly, prolongs the life. Our TA and all those in our neighborhood were treated that way and survive well. A non-live PTO as found on and H can be adapted to your tractor as is. Jim

The only manual I have currently is from I&T Shop Manuals, IH-10. I have been a mechanic for 22 years and I must say that this manual is pretty terrible.

Are there manuals that would be more helpful than this?

Currently I am in the process of undoing all of the wiring that had been "installed" over the last 40 years. I am modernizing the wiring to make it neater and less prone to catching fire.
