Power Steering, How To?

Hey guys.

I've got a Super M with the Charlynne
power steering system, and I am less than
impressed with it. For the last two years
I've battled all kinds of stupid little
problems with it. Resivor always leaks,
etc..

Well today it broke the belt, and I had a
new thought.

Is there any reason I can plumb the power
steering motor into the tractors
hydraulic system?

I've got an M and W mag pump on the
tractor, goes to a single spool valve
(for a remote), then back into the tank.

Too much or not enough pressure?

My only concern at this point, if I "T"
into the pressure line before it gets to
the spool valve, will the resistance of
trying to steer the tractor be more then
the pressure relief in the valve? So then
instead of steering it just dumps back
into tank?

Thanks!

Interesting, so I kinda need to find out how many gpm my pump is huh?

You tried to do the same thing I presume? What happened? Slow steering and slow hydraulics?

I personally think a separate belt driven pump is way to go on the older tractors with low GPM hydraulics.

You can get an adjustable flow divider. It goes in pressure line from pump Line off of restricted flow goes to torque generator and other line to other hydraulics. I was getting too much pressure to torque generator (SMTA) so ended up with relief valve in the line to torque generator. I agree with other posts, if you have the pump it works better. You can replace pump with power steering pump from old chevy if it is bad. On mine I have to rev engine up pretty good to get lift on my 3 point.

Would need a priority valve that made sure steering was always available, is usually used where the same pump is used. and then...

would worry about the old steering being set up for 600 lbs and the new plumbed in system be at 2300 lbs.... You would be blowing seals, gaskets and pistons all over the place.

Priority valves designed for steering use have a relief that protects the steering circuit.

Interesting, that would have been the factory style hydraulic pump I suppose, but I imagine close to same as the m and w? Was your fast hitch or remote's slow responding?
