international td6 blowing white smoke

I recently bought a international td6 crawler. I have changed the oil and filter and doing a few little things. I've had it running and noticed that in diesel mode it is smoking white. It seems to run fine otherwise. I'm guessing maybe an injector is stuck or is it old fuel? The fuel is probably 2 years old. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks in advance.

White smoke out of gasoline, thats because it's not shutting of all the Diesel fuel, the detent's and are dry and not falling into place! Check that first on the linkage!

2 year old fuel shouldn't matter.Just top it off with fresh.b How long are you letting it run? they tend to blow white smoke till they get warm.My Wd9 is like that. It had a half tank of 50
yearold diesel in it when I first got it and started it. Ran just fine. Topped it off with fresh and run it through. Those gas start diesels, they were notorious for cracking headsMainly because
guys would not allow for proper cool down. Shut it down HOT,you crack the head.Crack the oil pan drain plug, look for water. However any water may only be condensation. Look in the radiator while it
is running, look for bubbles.Start it,let it get good and warm and put it to work. See if the smoke clears.

the fuel has nothing to do with it. first of all is it smoking steady or only for a few minutes on changeover, then clears up?

It does in diesel mode when I switch it over. I have not run it more than 5 minutes. I was going to put a little injector cleaner in the fuel and add some new fuel and push some snow with it for a half hour and see if it clears up.

The coolant level is fine and has not changed. I forgot to let you guys know that. It has not really been run good in a couple years. I'm thinking if I run it awhile it will clear up. Hopefully I'll find out next week.

Assuming it has a blade, take it and push up a pile of dirt making a hole a foot deep by 20 feet long and see what the exhaust looks like after a little work.

well yes,... u got to warm it up and work it . you have no problem yet. any of these gas starts in good shape dont smoke on changeover.
another thing is the colder the weather the more u run them on gas to get the engine warm so it switches over smoothly. in cold weather they
can run for 2- 3 minutes or more. standard run time is about 1 minute. make sure you idle them if the engine is hot for a good 15 minutes
before shutting down on diesel. everyone argues over shut down on diesel or gas. its a diesel engine, diesel cools faster at idle and shut
down on diesel. why switch back to gas to heat up the small gas valves. also shutting down on diesel the small valves are closed and
dissipate the heat. you never leave them open. yes add conditioner and even 2 cycle engine oil to the diesel. these are very good engines if
looked after and will last a long time. post back after you have used it.

through a piece of old carpet over the front of the radiator if in cold climate. We used to put a piece over our MD to help get it up to temp in the winter. Never starved for cooling.

Not related to the smoke, but I would drain that old fuel and burn it elsewhere. Equipment will run on old diesel but it will reduce the life of your filters. My memory of my TD-6 is that it has decent size filters. The number and size of filters determine how long it will run on old fuel. I have one tractor with one small filter and it will starve on two year old diesel in less than ten minutes and the filter will be a mess. Combine and large tractor (with two large filters each)will run all day on it, but the filters will need changing sooner than normal.

If the smoke does'nt clear up after the enginge's oil has reached temperture check the injection pump timing. As
Diesel engines wear the timing can retard slowly due to gear wear (lash), and wear on metering edges in the injection pump.

Yes I read about that in the owners manual. I'm moving it from where it is to my place which is about a 3 hr drive. I can tinker with it when I get it to my place. Hopefully it's a easy ft. It has 2500 hrs on it.

Update on the engine smoke. I ran it a good hour pushing snow and the white smoke cleared up some. I put some new fuel in it so it has about 3/4 tank. I put some injection cleaner in the fuel. I'm thinking the injection timing may be off a bit. All in all its not as bad as it was before. I probably wont get up there to run it again for a few weeks. I'll check the injection pump timing in the spring when it warms up. Thanks for the help and good luck to all.

Kettyspanky, thanks for taking the time to post back.

. I forgot to mention that I looked in the radiator when it was running and there were bubbles so that's a good thing.

Better news on my engine smoke. I ran it a good hour again last week and is getting better. Once it gets warmed up there is little to no smoke. Once in a great while I get a pop and I think there may be a injector hang up or something. I think the injector timing may be off a bit also. It sure seems to be running better. I'm glad. I'll be up there again in the next week or two and run it again. Hopefully its getting cleared up just by running it more. I love that thing.
