Steam locomotive

I took this photo Friday, Jan. 23 , 2004 as Union Pacific
Challenger 3985 went through Piggott, Arkansas en route to
the Super Bowl in Houston, Texas from it’s home base in
Cheyenne, Wyoming. The locomotive was built in 1943, one
of 105 Challengers built between 1936 and 1943, sister to 4014 and
was retired in 1959 before being restored by UP employees.
Originally designed to use coal, but was converted to use Oil.
Weight is more than a million lbs,

I ran the Pere Marquette 1225 (Polar Express) in 10-2018. This locomotive and tender weighed 850,000 pounds. Amazing how agil it was to start and stop.

Blackhole49 I wish I had known that I'm only about 4 miles from where it sets at home. I've been in to town to see it in the past. Also have some pictures of when they went to the elevator and picked up a grain train and pulled out to Owosso for show. One of the pictures is of the smoke back over the train on a cold about 10 degree still day that day.

Did this for my 65th birthday, it was a bucket list item. A couple of times a year they allow people to operate it. You pay dearly for the privilege, but for me it was worth it.

Great pictures and fantastic opportunity.
We drove to Wisconsin, in 2019, to see the UP 4014, "Big Boy". We stayed about 100 feet away to get a great view and some video. No one between us and the train.
One trip to Philadelphia, a number of years ago, we went to the train museum in Scranton, PA, to see UP 4012 "Big Boy", now being restored.
It would be great to ride/drive a steamer but I spent my "bucket" money on rides in a B-17, B-24, B-25 and as Bombadier in the B-29, "DOC". One more on my list; P-51 Mustang. Saving my pennies!

Did the B-17 a year ago. Could've done the Mustang also but was afraid my tendency for motion sickness would get the better of me. Good thing I didn't, the B-17 was almost too much.

The whistle on that locomotive sounds awesome !!! Thank you for posting this, really enjoyed the footage. I have seen but one working steam locomotive, almost 40 years back at the D&H Colonie Yard, north of Albany NY. I spent a number of years off loading rail cars of lumber in that yard, all the buildings and tracks are gone, just the main line passes by what was a major repair yard for the D&H.

Durango to Silverton......2012
My wife and I were on our fourth month of retirement....

I asked the Engineer what it would take to enter the cab..?

I had my Steam papers with us....
The gentleman asked me some questions on my back ground, then ..get in the CAB NOW!!!!!!
