John Deere B Drawbar

One of the 4 bolts that hold the drawbar assembly to the tractor broke. I had a very difficult time getting the broken bolt out. There was about 1/4 of an inch of the bolt sticking out because just the head broke off. Tried a vice grip first. No go. Then I tried heat. No help. Then I drilled a small hole up thru the bolt so I could spray some penetrating oil in from the top. No go. Then tried welding a washer and nut to the bolt. Thought that was working but about 1/2 inch of the bolt broke off and screwed out. Finally I decided there was nothing to do but drill and retap it. Got that done but now the bolt is a little sloppy in the hole. What should I do so it will hold good.. Locktite or is there something better?

Thread inserts are the best in a high stress application. Helicoils work, but are much more finicky, and (opinion) not as stout. Plastic thread repair is OK for non critical applications, not this. Jim

Try tapping the hole as deep as you can to the original size, then thread a stud in Loctite and use a nut on the stud to secure the drawbar.

I had about the same thing on my D17 front axle. Got a helicoil kit from local real parts store. Drill bit tap and helicoil inserts. Puts you back to original size bolt or stud. Have some left think they are 3/4 course thread. If you were close could use kit. Southern Il.

another thought, can you find a metric bolt slightly larger in diameter than you have and drill and tap for that bolt?

I used to get studs from John Deere that were over sized on one end. Worked good when std size was loose. I don't know if they still have them.? It would be worth it to check.

If you can run a bottoming tap to the bottom of the hole either use a longer bolt or put in a heat treated stud to full depth, then a grade 8 nut. Unless you use the tractor on something like a small baler the pull on the drawbar is pretty much in one direction, so being able to tighten the all bolts should be good enough. Small balers put a lot of back and forth shaking on the drawbar, which can shake things loose.

A sickle mower will shake it pretty hard. There is no weight but the shaking will make a bolt that is not snug in the hole loose in a hurry.
