John Deere 45 combine

Ok might need a little more advice the only way I can get the combine to start outside and yes it's 20 degrees out I have to use staring fluid to get it to start when it's in the warm shop it starts right up it does have a electric fuel pump the mechanical one was bypassed and the pump is pumping gas what do you think might help with cold starts thanks everyone for your help

Most likely thing is your compression might be a bit low.Haveing to use starting fluid in 20 degree temps is not uncommon.NOTHING starts easy in cold temps.I would'd worry about it.

Make sure the choke is fully closing.

Use a GOOD high CCA battery and make sure all electrical connections are "clean brite and tite" and battery cables are the right ones for the job (not some skinny aftermarket replacements).

Install a tank-type coolant heater. (As I recall there isn't a place to install a block heater.)

The motor was supposed to have been rebuilt so I'm hoping the compression is good I'm not sure about the electric fuel pump it's mounted up next to the motor thinking about moving it down by the gas tank one more question can you use the original mechanical pump and a electric fuel pump at the same time? Thanks everyone

Put the electric pump down at the tank. Make it a 'pusher',not a puller'.Works better that way. Those old engine driven pumps weren't as reliable as they should be. Yes you can use em in tandem. On my 45;55; 95 combines I ended up totally removeing the old engine driven pumps and throwing the away. Then built a plate to cover the hole. The electrics do the job perfectly with no issues what so ever.

Mount the electric fuel pump below the gas tank. Could that be your problem?

Electric fuel pumps push fuel, they don't pull fuel, as opposed to mechanical pumps that pull fuel.

BTW, I once had a gas burning John Deere 105 combine that kept vapor locking during the summer wheat harvest. There aren't too many thing yuckier than to have a vapor locked combine in the middle of a field on a 100 degree day.

I solved that by installing an electric fuel pump under the gas tank. If there was vapor in the fuel line, the electric pump pushed solid gasoline through anyway.

Starting with ether kind of negates the easier starting in cold weather for diesels doesn't it? I'd hate to think I needed ether to start our one gas engine tractor the H will start in -20F without any help.

Some models of engines have no problem with starting fluid while starting fluid will destroy others, and its not the make of engine its the model. Many newer engines can' take ether

Some other JD combines used a Facet brand elec. pump located about level with the bottom of the tank IIRC.
It had a JD part # and was about 3 psi rated. 7700 or 8800 series??

I put a third on making sure the choke is closing, those long push pull cables can get real stiff and draggy. The comment about moving the fuel pump down below the tank is not your problem, however it is not a bad idea. The reason I say that is since the mechanical pump is bypassed the fuel system does not know if the engine is turning or running. So gas must be getting to the carb for it to continue to run after the either start.
