Something I think I need.

I have a 42 JD H hand crank.
I use it for cultivating and plowing up potatoes.

As I approach 69 years of age, my shoulders and back make it harder to crank.
It usually fires up very easy when warm.
Difficult for me to turn when cold.
I rebuilt the engine years ago and it has good compression and runs great.

Would like to find a starter-generator like was used on a Cub Lowboy or the old Allis Chalmers B series garden tractors and rig it up with a belt to the flywheel to crank it and charge the battery.

Any ideas?

Thanks, Richard in NW SC

Aircraft commonly use starter/generators. Most are 24 volt starter/28 volt generator. Use 2 12 volt batteries or one 24 volt aircraft battery.

You might be able to trade your H for a different tractor. Do your implements fit any other tractors (JD B or A) or do they only fit an H?

get the flywheel, starter, generator, bracketry and sundries from an electric start "H" and retro-fit.

Make it easier on yourself. Unless the tractor has family/sentimental value sell or trade it for something more user friendly as far as starting, steering, getting on and off, hydraulics, etc. My age is north of yours so it would be an easy decision for me even with a family tractor heritage in the decision mix.

New Paris Tractor Parts will have the correct parts to convert it to electric start. (574) 831-6820

I probably have some around here but any generator will run if you back feed it.Might have to help it get going but with a small to large pulley it might work.Another idea would be to put an impact on the flywheel to help start the tractor.Around here I'd just park it on a hill.(LOL)

There's lots of Hs that have starters on them and any parts John deere guy can supply u with what you need. They run a 6 volt battery on them and the battery lot of times go under the carb. Once you put it on you will wounder why you didn't do it sooner.

I am not selling this tractor and getting something else.
It will be here when I die and oldest son wants it.

Buy yourself a nice late model B with rollo-magic. Use the H for fun. Hey the solution is always another tractor.

Put a small rubber tired wheel on the 1/2 inch electric drill mounted on a vertical 2x? hinged at the bottom near the ground, hinged to another 2x? that you can put your foot on. Then while drill is running the correct direction, push it against the flywheel. Of course petcocks open, throttle advanced a bit, out of gear, of course.

Doesn't cost much, might work slick.

If it doesnt work, I am nowhere to be found!

H didn't have petcocks but with a heavy drill it might work. I have an old Mall 3/4" that runs at 250 RPM. Probably would turn an H directly but it's not reversible.

When you want to start it, order a burger from DooeDash. Tip the delivery person 20 bucks if they will crank the Deere. Lot cheaper than the $600 kit.

The starter generators really do not have a lot of torque, and belts like to slip, I would look for something else with a gear.

I have a Koler engine out in my shop that has one. I have the engine due to the fact is had a rattle in it and the guy had me replace it so he left it for me to play with

How about this Richard?

Yep, I have that photo saved on my computer from when it was posted before.
I have thought about something like that.

Good ion you that you want to keep using that old H. I am not a Deere guy but I know that an H is rare compared to most other Deeres.

That picture reminds me of how I set up a dump bed I once had. I use the flywheel of a car with an automatic trans and the starter and had it mounted to the hyd pump. Starter spun the pump and bed then could be lifted

I like the tire on flywheel idea.
I don’t know if an electric motor would work.
But the school use to have a snowblower that had a 110 motor with a belt to start up the blower.
Of course you could only start it when need a plug outlet then.
Might work if it never stalls and always gets parked inside

Yep, I am attached to this old H.
I guess I have had it about 35 years.
And I love to use it in the garden.

let me be the first to tell you to git rid of that tractor and get a horse. Won't have to crank it to get it started. just joking ..lol...good luck with your conversion. gobble

Reversing the leads on the brushes will reverse it! Make a Hex Key adapter to fit the flywheel holes with a taper on the back side to force it out of engagement when it fires. Put a pipe in the drill head that reaches the ground. My dad made a direct start crank adapter to fit a baler engine crank hole. 1/2" Mall drill no issue. Jim
