Hey Keith Moulden

Trying to get mentally prepared here for my Tuesday hip replacement. Remembered that you are going tomorrow - so good luck and speedy recovery.

Just a question for those having hip replacement, what's the criteria for replacing it versus shots/therapy, etc?? At the young age of 64, my left one won't let me walk long distances. I did a little more than 1/2 mile yesterday and it was sore!!

Mine was going bad for years, but the nnalert I was taking for my knees kinda of masked it apparently. After I slipped on snow cutting wood I blew out what little cartilage was left - that was 3 years ago. I did PT the first year and got along OK. But it kept getting worse so I went to an Orthopedic surgeon. He told me it was shot and showed me the x-ray. Even I could see the difference between the two sides. I had hoped that shots were an option - but he said in my case it might not help, or would only work for a short period of time if it did help.

When it gets to the point that you don't want to do the things you have always done - like walk to the end of yard, or get out the weedeater - its probably gone farther than it should. I just barely was able to get my 3 cord of firewood felled, skidded, cut, split, and stacked this spring. Getting on and off the tractor was hard,

I planned on surgery a year ago, but nnalert and my first surgeon moving to a different hospital messed things up. Now that I am facing it - wish the heck I had done it last year like originally planned.

Will be interested to see if Keith responds.

This should get you a number of responses from the medical staff here. My opinion: This is a question you need to ask your primary care physician as cases/people vary. What the criteria for you get from your PCP is may be different than what My PCP says for me. Different insurance providers may require different steps, alternative treatments that must be tried first, as well.
