John Deere 4020 Return Boot Replacement

I recently had a return line boot cracked and leaking right above the hose clamp. I went ahead and changed all six and the first time I fired it up after the repair two of the new boots started leaking again in the same spot just above the clamp. I found these VERY hard to replace and hate to tackle this again without looking further into this. Does the return line have to come completely off to change these? I am sure there is something I am missing with these but I would appreciate any advice with changing these as I am at a loss....

I take the return line off and get or make a set of pliers for the clamps it’s a ten minute job with a cigarette break nothing to it

1st. I have very poor luck using any clamp but the type that was factory. Twist style hose clamps just dont work well. I also found installing all new ones is best. Very cheap though A+I. Sometimes you can take your palm and tap down on them while running to seal them. The return line has to be straight not bent up, slightest curve they will leak. Wire clamps need to be in the little groove in the boot, not half on, half off. Al

If it is a hard job you're doing something wrong. Key thing is to get some hose clamp pliers, it makes handling the clamps a piece of cake. I replaced them on my 4020 a few years ago. Most of the jobs that I tackle like that fight me back, but this one stands out as being much easier and faster than I was expecting.

I made pliers like these by cutting a groove in each jaw with a cut off wheel on my grinder . Without them it is a lot tougher job
