Off Topic - Health Advice for Men Over 50

I have now had the two most common cancer types for men: skin and prostate. I just finished my last prostate radiation treatment. Please go to the dermatologist and get a PSA
Test on a regular basis. They think they caught my prostate cancer early enough to get rid of it. My PSA score kept going up over the last few years.

And don't listen to just any local yokel doc that says cut it out. You can beat prostate cancer without surgery. But wait, i just used a book title in that last sentence. Go Proton Beam.

I was told that none of the methods are guaranteed to be 100% effective. Cutting it out can leave cancer cells behind.

Interesting.

A fellow who used to work for me told me his father-in-law was diagnosed with prostate cancer, and had radiation treatments ordered.

When he went for his first treatment, either the doctor did something that hurt him, or the doctor said something that irked him. Anyway, he refused to go back.

Fourteen years later, he died of something else that had nothing to do with prostate cancer.

I have a thorough physical at the VA every six months with blood analysis including a PSA test. I'm assuming they'll tell me if something doesn't look right.

Is that the treatment out off California,if it is, i know that one is suppose to work good. My cousin went thru it years ago,!!!!

Depends on the type and agressiveness of cancer. One of my grandfathers had prostate cancer, went through radiation and died of it within 2 years.

My other grandfather also was diagnosed with prostate cancer. A very slow growing version. He did of carbon monoxide 15 years later.

I have very high PSA, and have had for years. But, no cancer detected with a 24 sample needle biopsy.

I've consulted with 3 docs on this and the consensus is watch and wait. It's been 10 years and the number floats up and down a little but never moves either way consistently.

All the docs and all the info I've found seem to agree that if a man lives long enough, the odds are that he will get prostate cancer. And will likely die with it, but not from it.

I'd be sure to discuss with a urologist, cancer specialist, and your primary. Do what you feel best for you.

I had radiation treatment for prostate cancer a couple years ago. I settled for radiation treatment. Now I need to pee about every hour, depending how much water or coffee I drink. It messed up the crapper also. I have my skin checked about every 6-8 months. I have had cancer cut out a few times on my face. I am still alive so I guess it's worth the discomfort. Stan

I have the same problem with the peeing. Had seeds, radiation and harmone
therapy in 2000. I also take a diuretic for blood pressure and that makes it
worse. I've 2 melanoma's removed and go to the dermatologist every 6 months.

I would also add a colonoscopy . Had one of my very dear sisters funeral this week and my only brothers back in June. Both from colon cancer.

(quoted from post at 21:34:24 12/30/20) Just be aware that it may burn your skin. They didn't tell me and it burned me inside and outside. Took awhile to heal.

Retired farmer, every time I have a procedure they have me sign a statement giving all the possible side effects and less desirable outcomes. Maybe you didn't read it?

I had the prostrate surgery 3 years ago. PSA test results are still 0. Pathology samples of surrounding tissue during surgery were negative. Treatment options are on a case by case basis. Side effects exist for all the treatments as far as I know.

They don't give me anything or have me sign anything. One girl didn't even know that one of the shots I have to take causes
bone and muscle pain. She had to look it up on the internet. I just hope I can live one more year.

I had prostate cancer at 61. Read all the books and checked out all the options and decided to have it removed. I ended up at the University of Michigan Cancer center. That was 8 years ago. Intimacy is not quite what it use to be but still works and everything else was pretty much back to normal after a couple months of the surgery. I get my PSA checked every 6 months and has been non detected. The big thing is to get it taken care of before its too late. Some guys can go a long time with it being slow moving and just monitor it and others it will move a little faster. I was given the wait and see diagnosis by one Dr, but I wanted it taken care of.

The medical community believes that if all men lived to be 100 years old, that all of them will have some level of prostate cancer. That 40% of forty year old men have PC, and 60% of 60 year old men have PC. Looking back, I could see symptoms starting about 7 years ago,but I did not know what was the cause. My urologist suggested surgery first, because when the radiation fails to kill all the cancer, then he has to attempt surgery and the tissues in that area have been compromised, and that makes the end result less favorable. My point of view is that this is just another part of life. Make the most of it.

Supposedly if you have had melanoma you shouldn't get radiation treatment for prostate cancer. My father had a suspicious mole removed from his back 5 years before his prostate cancer diagnosis. When the urologist asked about previous cancers he answered none not thinking about the mole. The doctors believe the radiation awakened what was basically dormant melanoma cells which spread to an inoperable part of the brain. The family was told that melanoma basically feeds on radiation.

Riding a bicycle, a horse or a tractor will cause an elevated PSA. I forget how long or how many days you should abstain from the bike, horse, tractor or woman before the

psa test. Had my PC cure 19 years ago. Proton Beam no side affects.
