Farming In 1989

My old buddy Deeredon put together some more vintage vhs from 1989 showing some of his farming operations including tillage, seeding, and breaking new soil. Old Roosty6 with the 2090 Case even shows up at the 8:45 mark. Boy, that is a long time ago.

I've got a 1000 series field cultivator. The only thing I miss about the 1980's is being younger. Yes, there was some very good iron in those days but the times sure were tough. Could not even think about a 4455 or 6620 combine back then. If I had a time machine maybe I could go back and find a way to put the money in my younger self's hands to buy a 4455. I guess the only problem is that really does not erase the past of the primary me who had to live those times.

The 80s as I recall were pretty good to us. I think it was easier to afford new machinery back then. That 4240 in the video, and the press drills were bought new. Its true that interest rates were high but for me that was just good incentive to get out and stay out of debt as much as possible. I paid close to 20% interest on a piece of farm land and made sure to get that paid off as soon as possible.

Rusty, Thanks to you and Deeredon. You both do a wonderful job with videos. I saw some grain elevators in the background a few times. What town is that? Are you and Deeredon neighbors or do you have to travel many miles to help each other.

Is (or was) land easy to buy today (or in 1989) as there is mention of land buying. When I was a youngster on the farm in North Dakota it was not easy to buy land as there was rarely any for sale.

Hi Ron. That was the thriving metropolis of Lipton in the background with the elevators. Sadly all gone now as well as the rail line. We are not that far apart but those two fields were about 18 miles from each other. Land has always been available to buy here if you are willing to pay the price. Right now its been a good time to sell but I'd hate to be a young guy trying to start up and buying.

That was pretty modern equipment for 1989.

Here we had a 706 for the big tractor. The baling tractor was an AC wd45 and the rake/ mowing tractor was a JD A. Dad's grain drill was a Van Brunt on steel.

Grandpa had a Farmall M for his loader, a Farmall H for his mower. Dad did the baling with his wd45. The big tractor was a 4430. The grain drill was a rubber tired 1950's Van Brunt.

My other grandpa that lived 60 miles away ( in the good flat irrigated country.) Had a farmall M he used for mowing, raking, feed grinding, manure spreading and other jobs. His loader was a 3020. Dad comment several times how it must be nice to have such a fancy tractor ( power steering and live hydraulics) for the loader. Grandpa also used his 3020 for listing corn with a 490 lister. Sowed wheat with a 1960's John Deere drill. Also cultivated and hilled corn. The big tractor was a Case 970. It was used only for tillage. His retirement auction was in 2002. The Case had 3,000 hrs.

Very nice video rusty . Do you still use granular herbicide ? That’s a pretty good pulling tractor to handle 24 feet of cultivator with no front weights on

I think the last time I used granular was trifluralin about 2003 for weed control in yellow mustard.
I used to pull 24 feet of Morris field cultivator with the 930 Case in secondary tillage or pre seeding work.

I’ve never seen anyone around here use granular herbicide
pretty interesting it must have worked . I guess it’s not to hard
to see pulling 24 feet in secondary tillage applications I pull a
16 foot tool carrier in front of a 16 foot hoe drill I run the
cultivator about 4 inches deep and the drill 2.5 inches deep
with a 3020 Diesel powershift
