Vermeer 605c

Found a vermeer 605c baler for $800. Guy
says everything works he just got outta
farming. Looks decent. What do I need to
know about these balers? Good? Bad?
Otherwise? Worth the money? And the
stupidest question of them all, can a 460
farmall run it?

The F and newer Vermeer were open throat balers, they are more versitle.

A C has a closed throat, Thry are more fussy about moisture, feeding, etc from what I hear. I’ve never run one. Doesn’t mean it can’t bale for you, but it is an older technology.

I’ve had an F for a number of years.

460 will be VERY marginal, I think.
I have a 4’ Vermeer. I’m able to get by with a fairly new 75 engine hp tractor. I don’t think I could handle a 5’ baler at all. I have a 460 and haven’t tried it on my baler.

Round balers have evolved quite a bit since the '70s when the 605C balers were made. They were a good machine in their day but don't expect the nice tight 1500 - 2000 pound bale that the modern balers make. I welded the A-frame tongue on the early production 605 balers in the early 70's. My first real job after graduating from high school. I would think a 460 should handle that baler just fine. ADB

I can run my 605F very nicely with a 60hp Ford 5200 all day long. Rear tires are filled.

It would not really work with the Oliver Super 77. Just not enough oomph after I got to 4 feet or so. Could make a bale or two, carefully, but wouldn’t want to make a habit of it.

Pulled a 605g I believe with my 830, a stout 70 hp, and she would smoke good at a full bale. When the hay got a bit damp it would pull it right down when the bale got close to full. A 460 will run it but you will likely have to stop with a smaller bale in many conditions.

The older C series can still be useful but are less forgiving when baling and need drier hay conditions than newer balers. Also need full width windrows to get hay rolling and forming, you need to zig zag when starting the new bale until you see it has properly formed. If you're going to do smaller amounts, say less than 50 bales or so per cut, would think ok for you. If you can spend a little more consider the F and later 504 or 5400 models, need only about 40 pto hp to run them.
