A Regular SD Winter Scene from 1956

A guy would have to dig down a bit to crank it. Gives new meaning to "snow plows." Beadle County, SD, winter of '55-'56. I took this picture with the new Brownie Hawkeye camera I got for Christmas.

Thank you for posting that- I can only imagine the wind howling across the James River Valley that came with that snow.

Looks like a regular snow for South Dakota. 55 and 56 were very dry years for Iowa in the summer but I was too young to remember how much snow we had.

I put quotation marks on the word regular but this I pad and YTs system dont get along so the quotes did not show up. Should have posted from the desktop.

But it seldom snow's in the James River Valley, it snow's in Canada and blew's into Minnesota and Wisconsin !! Don't believe every thing i say,LOL !

J Hamilton is correct. Note the open gears on the steering post; an F-20 would have had enclosed worm gears, wouldn't it? From my vantage point on top of the haystack, I can still see my brother, SD Paul, drive this old Regular Farmall with a Farmhand F-10 stacker (we didn't call it a loader!) up to the stack with a big load of prairie hay. It had no muffler (exhaust came out on the side with a load roar) and the loose fitting radiator cover (I wouldn't call it a cap) slobbering a bit of water. After dumping the load of hay on top of the stack for me to pitch around to level, he'd throw the old Regular into reverse, back away from the stack, and tear off in 3rd gear (the highest it had!) for another load. He had all the mechanical skills to be a farmer; I was the academic type consigned to the menial work such as stacking hay! He's been gone for 13 years, and I, who turn 82 in a couple of days, still miss him terribly. But oh, the memories I have of growing up with him on our South Dakota farm.

Nice story of SD farm life, thanks for sharing. Also, I have to admire someone who has only 11 posts in almost 20 years. Shows some restraint.

My mom was born at Lake Norden in eastern SD, and as of '56, most of her brothers and sisters were still living and working around the area. I remember well (in the summer) working the farms of my uncles back then! Great, simple food and no A/C, power windows, auto trans or cruise control on the cars.

You are fortunate to have had a good relationship with your brother.
