Just plain curious need to ask? Peanuts??

Here where I live in Benton California next to they California white mountains. I have tried growing these crops. Squash and Cucumbers. If I am able to keep them in the ground some will get brown dried up leaves and die. If I run a shade covering in the summer I can keep them. this year I did pretty good with onions and garlic. What I am curious about is Peanuts. Looking for information on a good soil for peanuts. People down the road from me grow potatoes. Mostly all farmers in they area grow alfa and hay. Does any body out here have any knowledge on peanuts. Just asking thanks Brent.

I'm in Central Alabama...... Lots of peanuts grown south of us. Just for fun I planted a dozen raw peanuts out of a bag I got at a farmer's market. Surprised me they grew. Nasty things to eat right after you dig them!! Really good after a month of drying, even better roasted. Sorry not much help on how to grow them. Easy enough to drop a few seeds in the ground and see what happens.

If you can grow potatoes and alfalfa in the summer; peanuts might not be the best crop for you.

Peanuts need a long hot growing season. They are a tropical plant. They do better in a light soil than clay also.

But if you are just messing around with a home garden give them a try. You can start the plants inside to get a jump on and extend the growing season.

SE Virginia they grow the big peanuts,Planters used to have a big elevator on US 460 around Waverly VA,sort of sandy type soil there. My grandfather used to grow about a 1/4 acre every year on his place just across the river from DC in Alexandria VA he had sandy type soil always raised some nice ones we'd roast them.
He grew all sorts of things including regular and sweet potatoes.

I have have grown a few rows for home use. I am in SE VA with sandy soil. I plant using a plate planter on flat tilled ground. Sandy soil allows a shallow cut under the row to get underneath the roots and scoop up and invert the mature plants which helps the drying process. It is going to be tough to extricate peanuts from clay soil if it gets hard. You could till in some sand to a small area if you just want to grow a few plants. Need unroasted peanuts to plant. They like some calcium. It also takes warm soil temperature. I have to wait until early June to plant, and harvest in mid October. Hope some of this helps!
