painting old metal barn

I have an old Morton machine shed which needs to be repainted. Any suggestions for brand of paint and method of painting would be appreciated. Thanks!!

I pressure washed mine then gave it a vinegar rinse then used exterior latex paint, sprayed on with a 160$ Harbor Frt. airless. Looks great 5 years ago. gobble

My barn is not a Morton but it is steel siding, 48x48. We (my 2 sons and I) built it in 1984. I hired a painter this year to paint it. Because of paint oxidation, he and his son hand scrubbed it with abraisive sponges and power washed it. He then used a laytex acrylic paint. It looks great. I figure it is good for another 30+ years.
They did such a nice job, I had them wash my house, too, but not paint it. It is brick and vinyl siding.

I’ve had good luck with Sherwin Williams “DTM” (direct to metal) paint after power wash with 50/50 white vinegar water mix.

THe church(built by Morton) roof start peeling,it looked like snow in the grass after a rain. We were going to paint it till someone asked about the guarantee,it turned out it was covered for about two more months. They replaced it, no charge.

They stand by their warratnty as far as I know. They have a 50 year snow load warranty on roofs. I know they replaced some here in central Siberia several years ago.

For what it's worth, about 20 years ago I sprayed latex white paint on my old wooden barn. About 12 feet of the north wall was covered with old used galvanized steel roofing. I just sprayed the paint on without brushing doing a quick job. Today most of the paint sprayed on the wood is gone but the paint on that old galvanized roofing is still looking good. Go figure! I'll bet it has been 25 years. The paint on the bottom two feet of that tin was rubbed off by the hogs and I got out of hogs in 1996.

Some of these buildings have a polyester coating on them. If it has this type finish it would be a good idea to prime it with a bonding primer and then use an acrylic latex paint. Be sure to clean it good first.

Use TSP to clean it and around here they have been using a paint that makes it look like new and holds up well but not sure what paint it is

How about painting 60-70 plus year old heavy guage barn tin and galvanized nails with lead washers? You can see some panels have a lot of rust. Can't buy tin like this anymore.

If you not waaaay out in the sticks, sell that metal as "rustic" for more $$ than new metal put on.
