Onan/jd 318 question

I picked up an onan b43g for my skid loader today and I would like to test run it before I take my other engine out. Anyone know what the wires are and what to hook up to get it to run? It has a three wire plug by the coil and a single wire on the other side by the starter. I would like to know what each wire does. Google hasn't been any help.

I would think you could just put power to the coil to start it. The other 2 wires over there may go to the stator if the regulator was remote mounted. I would guess the one by the starter may be the oil pressure sender.

I agree with Jeff.

This engine would still have breaker point ignition, so no chance of burning up a module if an error is made.

Likely, the middle terminal in the connector is power to the (+) side of the coil and the outer two terminals are AC power from the under-flywheel alternator to the rectifier/regulator.

Check to see that the power wire goes to the (+) terminal on the coil and the condenser and wire to the breaker points are on the (-) terminal of the coil.

If you email me I can send you info on your Onan OR you can go to Smok Stak and find the Onan file dump, then search to find the file 965-0156.

Since the engine was from a JD I would search for wiring info on the JD site. If its a rebranded MTD mower you might find it there. I'm not swift enough to attach the file to this message. You will see engine ID after file number.

Google is a waste of time. As Jim said go to Smok Stak manual section. Along with 965-0156 add 965-0757. 965-0757 is the service manual. Do not put power to the points until you are ready to start. They will burn if powered up and not moving.

The Stak is free and you don't have to join anything to look up what you need. You can down load the manuals.

Does it have an external coil? If not it has a coil on the flywheel if you put 12V to that coil you'll burn it out.The 3 wires are probably your two charging system wires and the 3rd is the one to ground to stop the motor.
