I changed the oil and filter on the new to me 1550 today.Got the new filter at Napa. I let it run for about 25 minutes to get warmed up, after about 10 minutes it had ice above the carburetor. Wondering about making some kind of heat shield to warm the carburetor.

I drained the oil and changed the filter, the filter has very small holes in it compared to the old one, is this right, okay to use? This is the one Napa recommended. It carries about 25#’s of pressure before and after oil change.

It has a generic oil pressure guage, when you first start it, seems like it takes a long time to register on the guage. It was like that before the oil change.

That is a bypass oil filter, not a full flow filter.

The one you took off was also a bypass filter, note the small hole in the center.

What it does is meter a small amount of oil through the filter and dumps it back in the pan. If it had a full flow filter it would loose most or all oil pressure.

Yes, it is a bypass style filter. So as Steve pointed out the only amount of oil that had to flow through the 5 what look to be about 1/4” holes is what would flow through the one small hole in the center. In the NAPA filter the oil just flows through the two smaller holes. I would guess the mfg. of the filter you took off has 5 hole end plates punched out like that by the thousands. Since many filter applications are a general diameter they can thread the center hole for the proper threads and use those same plates for hundreds of applications. Many of which today are full flow which require to be able to flow all the oil the pump puts out. The mfg. of the replacement NAPA filter which is WIX for some reason decided to utilize a special end plate for this type of bypass filter.

I used to have an M that was real bad about frosting. I just hung a 'curtain' on that side, from the radiator to the carb. the warm air kept it frost free.
