Sundog Sunrise

I took this panoramic shot this morning to get both sundogs in the frame. Scenic but cold with that Northwester blowing enough to cause ground drifting. At -6F its the kind of day a guy appreciates having lots of trees around for shelter.

I hate to say it, but I think my computer just froze up!!! UHMM, and just where are all those trees or was that just wishful thinking? "Keep you stick on the ice".

Yesterday was the first day that the ice did not melt from the pond by mid-afternoon. The good news is we've only had an inch of snow so far. The bad news is that pond is still a foot below the overflow pipe.

I pretty much believe the old saying, "As the days grow longer, the cold grows stronger".

In southern Alberta, we always said moisture would follow 90 days after a sundog. Seemed to be right. unc

I had never seen this before till a couple years ago.
I has to be clear and cold to see this phenomenon,
we don’t get as much deep cold as Saskatchewan,
and get a lot more cloud cover days.

I see them fairly often on late afternoons in the fall. Usually only one side though. Clouds obscure the southern arc.

The trees were behind me to protect me from the cold Northwester blowing. My farm is an oasis of trees compared to the neighbours who have cleared almost every one. I headed out to my West line on the Massey after this photo and believe me, I definitely appreciated every bush I drove by. Sunshine and no wind = a nice day even at these temps.

Thats a nice one. Almost a full ring around the sun. When I see that or the sundogs I don't need to go outside to know what the weather is like. "Frosty" I think they said the wind chill factor was about -31C this morning.

South Sask. But not so far south that we don't have any trees.
