Done with harvest for this year

Finally finished up the corn on Friday. Unusually warm so lucked out with that. Had been waiting for it to dry down enough to keep (don't have a drier yet, and have increased direct off farm sales). Always enjoy everyone else's pictures so thought I would give a couple from "my neck of the field". I did get the new to us 986 in one, along with my 90 year old helper. :)

This field made an "L" kind of shape around the side of a little knob. Our weather this year was a bit like Bruce in Canada's, extreme drought most of the summer, just getting some water in the last month.

Yes Bruce, it made a little corn but nowhere near normal. Probably about half the yield. Pap does the best when I can get him out in the fields. Makes him feel at least a little bit "useful", I tell him he is more than a little help! That 986 cab tractor is a first for us, never had a cab before except on a combine. He bought it couple years ago at the auction of a guy we knew after his passing. Had bought a couple other pieces of equipment off of him while he was still living, so had a pretty good idea of what to expect of it. I just have to help him get in it then he is good to go.

Bob, it's a JD 4420 about 1981 vintage if I read the serial number right. If I remember right it only had 1100hrs. on it when we got it. Looked up some pictures, we've had it 9 years now.

That picture is from the day it arrived here. It's not that clean looking now! I've had to replace too many bearings from the wash job it had! I may take a bucket and rag to it some warm day though to give her a little sprucing up.

This picture is from 5 years ago combining oats. This picture was taken same day the guy that owned the farm where I just finished corn at past away. While I was combining that day I kept thinking of him wishing he could come over to see us in the field. He and my dad went to school together in the old one room school house just off the edge of his farm. Was a big loss to the area and to my dad, they had been friends for over 80 years. That was one reason I started helping him out and picked up a few extra acres for our operation.

I think it is pretty well on the way out here. Had better part of 10 inches snow after 5/8" rain the 1st and 2nd of December. Our spring has been running good ever since so that is a good sign. Had been worried about needing to haul water since back in end of June! Hope you get the moisture you need too.
