1949 Farmall H hood fit

Hello
I’m having hard time getting my hood to properly fit when installed on tractor. My hood measures 33 1/2” inches but I can’t adjust the radiator either shroud to get the 33 1/2 inches it leaves at least a 3/8” inch gap on the left side (viewed from seat.
The radiator shroud is maxed out as far as it is allowed to go as the bottom of the shroud is very tight on the radiator frame. I’m not sure if I’m calling it correctly when I say frame, but it’s fitting tight.
I actually have the radiator top adjusted to where it’s leaning in in a attempt to get the radiator and shroud to measure 33 1/2 inches.
When i secure the hood it just looks like crap.
Any suggestions out there for this Ustinov having.
Thanks

My tank isn’t adjustable 3 point mount with round holes.
If I was able to adjust tank forward then I would have to remount the air breather to clear hole in hood.
Thanks for your reply

I have three M Farmalls. I have the same problem. Unfortunately IH did not spend a lot of time trying to get sheet metal to fit like modern tractors. It sounds like that is as good as it gets. The entire radiator can be moved forward a little by loosening the two bolts that hold the radiator to the bolster, but that means shortening the radiator hoses. Good luck, Ellis

its all in the radiator. it moves back and forth on the bottom mounting holes. it will take a few trys but those hoods do fit good when the time is taken to align everything. especially when someone else had it torn apart before. and when things are lined up thats when you tighten the rad hoses.

Ellis thanks for your reply, I have come to the conclusion that is about as good as it gets also.
I’ve moved about everything that can be moved and it just want get the fit that I like. But oh well hell!!
Thanks again
Donnie

Thanks Diesel Fumes for your reply.
At this point I’m going to have to accept the fit, don’t like it
but I’m just going to go with the flow. I’ll have to now figure out to hide ugly.
Thank Diesel

Thank for replying Rustred, I’ve move everything that can be moved. With radiator loose and no hoses connected I can get a real close fit buuut when I attempt to latch the hood down that is when the radiator moves on that left side about a half inch, just enough to get ugly.
There’s no adjustments as far as the latching parts.
Let’s say this there’s no adjustments “yet”.
Thanks Rustred

Try to find others who own H's and examine those closely. Maybe at tractor shows next year. Or if you know of someone who owns one or just see one sitting as you drive down the road.
Trying to get all the openings to fit is tough but I'm sure it was better than that when it left the factory.
Dave.

Thanks for replying Davebn, Farmalls are very scarce around here in the Wake Forest, NC. area, and nnalert has practically got everything canceled around here. I would love to have a pocket full of money and head to all of them farm equipment sales up north. Farmall’s go cheap up there. As for the hood goes I’ve got it close and maybe I’m trying to get perfect and I maybe shooting for the moon as they say. But I’ll keep digging at it and had a few more ideas while “sitting on the toilet” this morning that’s where I/we do our best thinking 🤔 right. It’s just about when I try latching the hood down the left front moves apart about 3/8” to a 1/2”. Thanks Donnie

There is a tractor photos section to this site. You can scroll through that site to find a few H's. If you are on modern view you can click on the Yesterday's tractors icon in the upper left corner of the screen. That will get you to a page where you have a list of options along the left side. Tractor photos is down maybe a third of the way. I did a little looking there and some of the photos aren't the best when you zoom up close but the last one I looked at had a perfect fit hood to tank and hood to radiator. Tractors are like cars. If you have ever tried to fit body panels or doors on a car on a car you will find no two cars are the same. On your tractor it could be the frame rail bolts to the bolster a little crooked making the bolster locate a little farther ahead. Maybe the radiator mounting holes are cast a little funny in the bolster. If you keep at it I will place a bet you can get it tight but you might have to ream out a hole or two. it just depends on how much time you want to spend on it.
