What muffler?

My newly acquired Farmall 706 with the D282 engine came with a straight chrome stack. Man, is it loud! Even wearing hearing protection it is irritating.
My 656 with the same engine has one of the oval black mufflers and is so much quieter. I would like to find the same muffler for the 706. It mounts on a 2" pipe that's about 2.375" OD. Trying to figure out what part # muffler it is. I found a 533924R1 that seems to physically match up in size but it doesn't list the D282 or 706 as a model it fits. Is there any reason not to use it if it physically fits?

That part number corresponds to a muffler that fits the 454, 574 and 674. I doubt it will fit on the 706 exhaust pipe, but I cannot find any dimensions to verify.

It appears you need a muffler with a 2-15/16" ID inlet and roughly a 3" outlet. The IHS1772 muffler from Steiner is probably what you need.

the muffler you need is 370773-R91. i was just cleaning up the muffle on my 560 yesterday. the pipe is 3 3/8" as with all these 282's and the
rest on these old tractors. i am sure this is the original original muffler the tractor came with.

actually on second thought i believe the 706 muffler has a longer body, but the measurements are the same. so it would be a different number on the muffler. and also thought those were black mufflers.

I used to just go to NAPA and get a straight-through auto muffler that fit the pipe, put the flapper on top, and off we go. I never suffered any adverse consequences. Was I under-thinking it?

Ford 2000; 3 cyl. gas; 4/1 Trans.....I went to the local auto muffler shop to replace the muffler that came with my tractor and it fit fine and is quiet. The only potential problem is that the top of the muffler is recessed instead of being a domed top so rain will run off. It means that rain collects in the shallow 'pan' of the top and, in the future, may rust out the top of the muffler. No problem so far but something to keep in mind.

But the pipe off my manifold is 2-3/8" not 3-3/8" unless thats just a typo. My 656 has an oval type instead of the round one and I just like the look of that better. It is 2-3/8" as well. Not sure the # of it.
I guess my question is would the muffler 533924R1 be too restrictive or otherwise harmful? It measures as though it would physically fit fine.

I put a chrome stack on my 4020 out of college I thought I was
cool you could here that thing for 3 miles In any direction with
ear muffs it wasn’t to bad finally I decided that was enough
and I put a muffler on

yes, yes, 2 3/8. my dam fingers or eyes. hardly matters long as u it to fit 2 3/8 . i just like so things look original.

Save your self a bunch of time and aggravation, one call Thomure Manufacturing East Prairie Mo 800
527 9954 or 573 649 3628 . Muffler experts and prices beat the heck out of IH dealers.

2 15/16 that's what a 806 is, and my Super MTA is, because i have a special manifold on it, it was made in Ohio !

What the heck! this is about as rare as can be! i bought this in 1981 pretty sure. same set up with same side cabinet. where are you located? same one yes.

this is the 282 he is referring to, its what they call 2 1/2 inlet. pipe is 2 3/8 though.

Mufflers vary as much regarding their internal construction . For example the oval muffler for a Deere 435 from Deere . Is much quieter and has a different tone than the aftermarket version of the same muffler .

Your right, 1981. I bought mine used in about 1983 and the side cabinet is a few years newer. I don't think I've seen another tool box with that picture before and frankly I'm kind of tired of looking at this one.
I'm in Northern Illinois a few miles below the cheddar curtain.

It's even more strange if that's a yellow tape measure on top of yours because there is also one on mine.

guess i better buy a lottery ticket now. was only a hand full of those made for 81. i sure did not expect to see another one. i also thought they could have had a better picture on it.

I have that style top and bottom box but it does not have the art/painting, the side box I have has drawers,, also have a bigger top and bottom set they are 30-40 years newer than the other,, I have had the ones like yours since the later 70's
