My dad always told me that the plug with the longer electrode was the hotter plug, but I read somewhere that it is just the opposite..

Well to get to the nitty gritty, on any spark plug the thinner the electrode the hotter the plug.

The spark plug operating temperature is determined by the length of the insulator nose, not the electrode. The length of the insulator nose determines the distance combustion heat must travel before it can be conducted away by the metal spark plug shell. The longer the insulator nose the higher the operating temperature will be in a given engine. Spark plugs should operate at a temperature in the range of 700 to 1200 degrees F. In summary, the heat range of a spark plug is it's ability to cool it's self. Hot plugs have less cooling ability and therefore, run hotter than cold plugs.
