NY state trailer inspections

Finally got the utility trailer I bought in September registered with the DMV. Had to do it by appointment and the appointment was 2 months out. My question is about inspections. Do trailer inspections run out the end of the year or are they like a car inspection where it is 12 months from the last time it was done.

I registered my trailer in Maine, $205 for 5 years, vs $112 per year hear in New Pork, i dont bother with NY inspection now. I got pulled over by Nysdot this spring, they told me my plate cant say semi-permanent, has to say Apportioned or some thing, i dident change it. NY can go pound salt.

My 5 ton and 20 ton registration expire December 31 every year. Maybe that's just commercial. Inspection goes by the month you have it done, can be anytime during the year.

They are like car inspections. They give you an inspection sticker that looks like a car windshield sticker but you keep it in the tow vehicle with the registration. You don't stick it on the trailer.

In Missouri, you register the trailer and keep the registration in the tow vehicle. I was able to buy a permanent tag this year for, IIRC, $67.00. This is for a 16' utility trailer rated at 7,000#.

Inspection good for 12 months. Registration expires Dec 31 and is prorated for every month you don't have it registered. I leave my boat in storage until May or June each year and then register it and pay a bit more than half the yearly cost.

For a renewal, you should be able to do it on-line and print off the temporary and use that until the real registration comes in the mail. But sounds like yours is a first time, and that probably has to be done in person.

My tandem deck over trailer is also registered in Maine. The cost for my last 5 year renewal was $96 in May of this year. I used the Staab Agency in Jefferson, Maine.
poke here
Ditto on the Maine registrations; Comrade Cuomo gets enough of my hard earned cash.....

I would have to disagree with some here. All my New York State trailer registrations have always expired on December 31st. Doesn't matter when you renew them, they still expire the end of the year. They prorate the registration fees depending on how much time is left when you register them. Since I seldom use them in the winter I usually wait till may before renwing them. Saves me a few bucks.

What are you disagreeing with? I see nothing written that is contrary to anything you've said.

In my case, even when I wait until May to renew, my three big trailers range from $70 to $100 each to renew. For THAT year. Yes, I "save" a little but it's still a lot of money for what little I use them.

he little bit of research I've done this morning would suggest that registering a trailer in Maine would be illegal. YMMV

I said it was better than the place i went threw, $205
for 5 years vs his $96 for 5 years if im
understanding it correctly. Nothing to do with NY
annual fee.

I wish Indiana did that.

if you wait to tag your car/truck after the due date. they charge you an extra $15 plus you still have to pay the full year registration fees and taxes regardless if there are 12 months or 12 days left. If you take a car off the road for 2 years (like you're restoring it for example) and then tag it, last i knew they still charged you for the full registration tax (exise) back to the last time it was tagged. Not sure about the registration fees too.

Indiana is considered a "low cost of living" state but they sure nickel and dime you here and there.

It is, and it was 12 years ago when I was still with the NYSP. At that time unless you had a physical address in Maine and could prove you at least visited there yearly, it was considered a fraudulent registration. That being said, I don't know anyone who ever got ticketed for it.

I know your mileage will vary/ Never have I had a trailer inspected. From utility to RV, just never bothered.
If I was a contractor or someone that pulled everyday then yes I would do it.
Fifty years of ignoring the law has saved me money!
I also keep my stuff in well regulated running order.

elcome to America: "Sure it's illegal, but that applies to everyone else. Not me. I'm better than those suckers."
