corn in upright concrete silo

(quoted from post at 02:21:50 12/05/20) Can I blow shell corn into a 80 foot Hanson concrete silo with a silage blower
You can blow it but it will crack it bad,Grainvac will do it without damaging it but will need different pipes

For feed or grain? Use to run shell corn thru a mixer mill and blow in a 60' silo Used a big screen and just cracked the corn. If storing as grain I would think it would cause damage to the corn from the blower.

If you are putting in dry shelled corn, a grain vac would be preferable to limit kernel damage. I have a 20x70 I fill with a grain vac.

But here is the other thing to think about... grain will put a lot more strain on the silo than forage. DON"T fill it very full. Silos converted to grain storage frequently have extra hoops added for strength.

Does it matter if the blower piles all the grain to one side of the silo or is there something special that needs to be done to fill the silo evenly?

You can only fill about 75-80% as full as you would fill silage, dry corn puts more pressure on. This is important.

Some folks have been successful augering dry corn into the blower pipe up a ways and letting the air stream carry the corn up. I’m not sure how they transition that to drop in and catch the air up the pipe. Running dry corn through the blower is very hard on dry corn.

Maintaining quality in a tall thin cylinder with no air flow possible can be hard on your nerves, hard to deal with hot spots or any issues that could develop.

Unloading to haul away can be hard in the typical silo location by a barn, figure that out before you start.

It looks possible but when you work through the details it’s not always that economical even with a ‘free’ silo.

An old Farm Show showing some concept of blowing grain without running the grain through the blower.

It sounds like getting over 60 feet gets difficult......

Grain blower

I have stored corn from a drying bin in a 24 x82' concrete silo for 40 years with good results. Fill with a bucket grain leg and have a 12'x12' perforated aireation floor with a centrifugal exhaust fan , around the center unloading auger. Keeping the corn cool is essential.
