Which truck to buy

I like my '08 Tundra, too. We bought an '03, 0% 60 month financing after the '04's were out. We paid it off & '09's were out. Went to a different dealer, they liked our '03 so much they gave us 70% of what we paid for it on trade of a new '08. We now have 132,000 trouble free miles on the '08. At age 77 probably not going to ware it out. So I just put a new pair of after market "modern look" headlight buckets in it to eliminate existing headlight "cataracts" that plague all headlights about 10-12 years old. Now I plan to drive it until I can't get in it anymore.

The more i learn about the quality and features that make them better, the more i like it. Its like having Corvette brakes with the 4 piston calipers and big rotors. The engine is balanced so well it doesnt shake at idle like the others i have owned. 4:30 gear ratio, but then the trans has 5th and 6th gear are both over drives which brings the final ratio back up where its suppose to be, but gives it that pulling power when you want it. What it does NOT have is that 8 cylinders going to 4 cylinders bs. It does not have direct injection. Yea! I love it.

My son and I bought 08 Tundras a week apart. We thought they were great trucks. A year and a half later, our tailgates were splitting. They wouldn't do anything about it. A weld was letting go. We ended up in arbitration with a complete a$$hole. To make a long story short, She asked how much weight we put on the tailgate. I told her the most weight that was eve on mine was me 250lbs. She said that I had overloaded it. There tailgate is only rated for 187lbs. We both got denied. We both traded for Fords within a week. Won't ever touch a toyota again. If they can't even make a tailgate, I won't trust there quality on the rest of the vehicle. What ticks me off the most is, I told them how to fix the problem. About a year later, a guy parked next to me with a brand new one, I asked if I could look at his tailgate. They took my suggestion and fixed the problem.

Typical advertising! It goes like this.
Let me show you our fully optioned vehicle verses their plain jane model.

I've owned some of the older 80's/90's Toyota's and have no complaints, they were good little trucks that gave good service, I've never owned a larger Tundra model.
In 2018 we were looking for a new truck, when I asked friends that owned Tundra's about their trucks they all say if you want better than 14 mpg don't buy a Toyota.
Toyota's web site list top fuel mileage at 16 mpg, this surprised me as all the older ones I owned got better fuel milage than any other brand at that time.
Finally settled on a 2018 Ford F-150 with the 5.0 V8 engine, it gets 18 mpg local and 19.5-20 mpg on the highway.
It's the wife's truck and I get her old rusty Silverado which is a upgrade from the V6 Dakota I was driving.

Over the years I have owned Ford, Dodge and Chevy trucks, all purchsed used. My experience was, take care of it and do not abuse, it will do what you need.
My last 5 trucks were all Chevys. Only my last one was new when I bought it. I retired from GM Powertrain Hydra-Matic service engineering. (I did buy a new Suburban in 1979. Awesome family vehicle!
My most resent truck (I bought new) is a 2018 Chevy Silverado 1500 4X4 with the 5.3 liter varialble displacement. So far, it performs very well. Has pep when I want it, hauls what I need to. I immediately replaced the factory tires with Michelin E rated tires and added adjustable airbags to the rear axle.
When I go to tactor show flea markets I have a 6.5 foot slide in camper that weighs 1300 pounds. I pull a 24 foot enclosed trailer with 12' flat bed wagon and my golf cart. My "wares" are on the wagon.
Traveling like that over a couple hundred miles I get 8-10 MPG.
Now, traveling empty truck and just me? I have a picture of my IP showing the best mileage that I got over 25 miles. Hold on, believe it or not, I have the picture, 29.3 MPG!
Granted, this was not on any expressway. I drove all secondary roads and not exceeding 55 MPH. I did easy launches and pretended that I did not have any brakes to stop. Coast, coast, coast! Try it some time. When there is no one behind you, let off the gas 1/4 mile from a known stop sign. How fast are you still going and have to apply brakes to stop.
Further, a friend has a similar Chevy. He likes to drive 30-35 mph going to town. I have passed him many times on our way to McDonalds for coffee (when we could still do that). We compare mileages. He does not understand that my RPMs are the same as his but I'm in a higher gear. Who is getting better mileage?
BTW, we are currently praying for his recovery from nnalert-19. He is in ICU with a ventilator and on sedative.
