Took the starter off. Was sparking terrible and ground to a horrible death. Tap with hammer handle and it made a couple more turns. Any way put it in a vice. Spins over fast, quiet and easy...... Little copper square was loose...... At first it wouldn't work with the switch. Took switch off touched terminal and it works fine. Bad wires or connection on tractor?

To me that says you either bumped it one time to many to knock something back in place or with out a load it does not spark. Te test will be if it still spark when under the load of spinning he engine over

Make sure that the mating surfaces on the starter AND the block are shinny clean! (Don't forget the battery ground! It has to be shinny, bright and tight, too!) No paint or oil/grease anywhere on the mating surfaces. What shape is the cable going from the battery, clear under the platform to the starter? I used a new heavy duty welding cable (woven copper type) to supply the starter & it made a a world of difference in the way the starter works. Remember, it's a couple of feet long and every inch robs amperage.

X2. Did you leave the band off when you bench tested it? If so, put it back on and see if it sparks OR look for arcing marks on the inside of the band. Also the braided copper needs to be stuffed where it's not in the way. Good Luck!

Find a band for it or at least cover the area with duct tape to keep "crap" & water out of the guts of the starter! Starters & generators need the covering bands to help keep the crap out and the magic smoke in them! Remember, in my (& others) opinion, "ifen ya let the magic smoke out" of any electrical equipment, it's usually shot!

I think it just needs a new field stud again . Going to clean it up and see keep it for a spare . Gotta new starter in the mail should be here next week . When I first bought this tractor it came with this starter and I’ve got it smoking hot more than a few times trying to diagnose engine problems

The "button" is not the correct one and must be tight and turned the correct way depending on the saddle sw whether it is in position for the saddle sw if the sw is either push or plull to enguage. It is a rebuilt starter and who did it has made a mistake on that button. Check another starter for a Cub and you will see the difference

Two of the brushes (opposite of each other) are grounded, the other two are not.

The stranded copper "leads" to the ungrounded brushed MUST be "dressed" away from the starter body and/or some insulation added or they will spark against the steel housing.

The "little copper square" has wires soldered to it on the inside AFTER it's tight. If you turn it without disassembling the starter and unsoldering/resoldering the connection, you've likely broken one or more connections and will have issues in the future.
