Tractor tuning

Bought a new 70 hp tractor last spring. Member of the family thinks I should have it "tuned'. Best I can tell it is a process where all the DEF or Regen equipment is disabled and the controlling computers are reprogrammed somehow. Claim is for 10% more HP and 15-20% less fuel burned, runs cleaner and will extend engine life? Sounds like it is an expensive process. Surely would void any manufacture warranty. Anyone heard of this or know anything about it? Thanks.

Will your "family member" be the person who will pay for the repair that isn't going to be covered under warrantee because you"tuned" it?

I have no experience with tractors, but my customers that have had their pickups "deleted" have been sorely disappointed in the supposed fuel economy increase. At best some have stayed the same, some actually get worse economy. You will also be stuck with something you can never sell. You think the "upgrade" is expensive, price what those emissions parts cost if you have to put it back stock. Just leave well enough alone.

Emissions tampering has become a very dangerous game. The more recent generations of diesels have been designed from the ground up with the emissions systems integrated into the design and engine tuning. In particular, EGR. By removing the EGR system, you are changing the combustion characteristics within the engine. Wasn't really a problem on early EGR engines, but more modern engines are designed from the ground up to run with the EGR in mind, and removing it is actually quite detrimental to engine life. The vast majority of tuning shops have no clue how to program the injection timing and duration to maintain engine longevity with a disabled EGR system. Also, the chance of getting huge fuel economy and power gains is getting slimmer and slimmer with consecutive generations of diesels with ever improving emissions and injection technology.

How do I know all this? I fell for the hype and disabled the emissions systems on my Western Star with DD16 Detroit diesel. Almost non-existent fuel economy gains, no power gains, and two catastrophic engine failures within two years. After I sold that truck, I did a great deal of research into why my engine life was so low. What I found is what I explained in brief above.

Could the DPF burner and DEF be disabled down the road? Possibly. But I wouldn't do it if you still have warranty. And absolutely don't tamper with the engine itself.
