Our 92 Ford F-150 is running rough all of a sudden when at idle or when downshifting at low speeds. WAtch the video to see what I mean. It has a 6 cyl and a 5 speed. No telling how many miles because they little digital odometer doesnt display right. Have owned it since new. It does need a tuneup and exhaust but trying to pinpoint the cause of this rough surging and high idle. Runs good and smooth otherwise until it decides to act up for a few seconds.

My '91 did that once, had to replace the intake gasket(5.0L). Later the IAC valve messed up causing rough idle/missing, replaced it and no
other problems. Since your odometer doesn't work, does your Check Engine light come on and if so does it throw a code?

I have the same engine/ trans combination in a 92 F-250 with 150xx miles and haven't had
any issues with it, in fact aside from being gutless it has been trouble free
transportation.

I would start with vacuum leaks.

I recently spent a considerable amount of time on a 90 F-350 , 460/automatic combination
with a similar issue, after much time and work to restore all the messed up and blocked
off vacuum hoses, I finally discovered that the transmission modulator valve was faulty.

It maybe something else but I would start with anything related to the vacuum system and
running the vacuum hoses first.

email me when you solve it or post the follow up here .

Thank you!! I will check all that. The truck was bought new by my great uncle and when he passed away in 1998, his BIL got the truck. It was used as a spare vehicle since 98 and sometimes a commuter truck. Pretty sure it has never been tuned up and only had oil changes. Cant tell but looks like 240,000 miles but maybe 340,000 miles.....honestly could be 140,000. Cant tell by the LCD. Truck has been reliable for sure and needs exhaust.

As el said, check for vacuum leaks. What you're describing is exactly how vacuum leaks act. That era Ford used hard plastic vacuum lines that after several years are known to become brittle and break.
