1971 Tractors

Look what you could buy for $115,000 in 1971. At least thats what the description of the photo says. Five four wheel drives and a 4020 with front end loader. This is the same farm as the post I made a couple of weeks ago with a whole line of 830 tractors farming that same land.

(quoted from post at 18:28:48 11/12/20) Wow! I think that is about
$743,000 today.
And that $743,000 wouldn't buy many tractors today I bet. Its pretty hard to compare. Those 7520s were top of the line in power in 71. By today's standards they are pretty low powered 175hp? Today's biggest are probably 600 hp plus and over half a million. So really no way to compare.

Correct, the 7520 was 175 PTO. At the time, JD unlike Steiger and Versatile rated their 4 wheel drive tractors at the PTO instead of engine or flywheel. It confused some farmers comparing brands. The 7520 was popular with the JD crowed around here. But top of the line
would have been the Versatile 800 and 900 or the Steiger Couger and Tiger. Or if you were a BTO, a Big Bud HN 250. Our tractor at the time was a MF 1800 which was about the same horsepower as the 7520.

HOW MANY JOHN DEERES does it take to pull a trailer truck with ONE John Deere on it. I
think a toyota PU pulled the space shuttle.-----------------Loren

That's a neat clipping, Rusty. I like the comment about traffic getting around them on Albert St south. They would have slowed traffic on #6 south as well - it was a pretty narrow highway in those days. Probably wasn't the volume of traffic back then that there is now. Little over 100 miles from Regina to Benson.

Thats a long drive Jim. Bet they went right by your yard.

Likely did, but that was before our time here.

To be factual JD used gross hp (bare engine no hyd pump no water pump, fan or alt using hp) rating then while CASE used rated pto hp,, Whole different system,, the CASE 1470 walked all over a 7520 at the demo's we did against them, in both pulling power and fuel usage,, we dealt with this construed ratings for years,

You sure you don’t have that confused with the 7020. 7020 had the same horsepower as a 1470. 7520 was altogether bigger tractor over 200 flywheel and 175 pto. I think the 1470 was around 145 pto. No way possible for a 1470 to out pull one unless it was a 7020. Also the 7520 really didn’t hit the market until the 1470 was out of production.

I guess its time to pull out the Nebraska Test charts to see actual performance. I don't know if I have them.

All three tractors. 7020, 1470, 7520

hmm you could be right as it was 1971 when we did the last demo with them,, that was what the post said so I assumed it was a 7520 sorry for the confusion,, a 1470 was rated at that hp yes but in fact put out well over that rating, the first 1370 we got in and sold was one of a handful of test units made, they were rated @142hp,, that one was putting out 170 plus hp with zero hours on it,, we seen the same results in all units other than the 1030's as they could not get enough air at our altitude with the too small dry type air filter, pull the filter and they would be @ 104-107hp stock,, 127hp with a M&W turbo kit,,

One of dad's customers bought a new 7520. Then in 1983 the banker sold everything but the house the guy owned. The sale was on a very cold and windy winter day.
The 7520 sold for $10,000.

Short story about JD tractors. In 1950 dad was ten or eleven. He went with grandpa to town to get parts for the 41 A. The town was full of people. They seemed to
all be headed to the JD dealer. They pushed their way through the crowd and found the owner standing on the front tire of a brand new tractor. They just took
delivery of two new model R tractors. The dealer was addressing the crowd to look the new tractor over as it was the largest tractor they would ever see John
Deere build! On the way home grandpa told dad that tractor was as big as a locomotive who would want one!
