Rebuilding a ford starter

Rebuild kits are 19.99. How difficult is it to rebuild one? Got one off my 960. And the new 851. It was working then slowed way down.....then a bit of smoke. It stopped!

Not all that hard to do till it is time to put it all back together and then the brushes can be a rel pain. One should replace the bushings or bearings which ever it has. Clean up the armature and check it for shorts. Install new brushes and assemble. The fun part is keeping the brushes pull back to install the armature

The smoke might have been a greasy commutator if you are lucky.

Usually a failure will be easy to spot, something burned or a broken connection.

Most Ford starters have soldered in brush leads. That can be difficult without the proper equipment. At least I have never felt good about my attempts.
