International 424

I have a international 424 tractor gas powered. I am having a problem with it popping at high speed. It has a TSX896 marvel carburetor. I'm working on it for a guy and he ran it out of gas. One problem turned into a bunch of problems Long story short. I checked the valve lifters and adjusted them The timing gears were shot replaced those spark plugs were fouled out points were no good change plugs wires condenser and points. Cleaned out the carburetor I'll look good probably should rebuild it. The fuel shut off solenoid has no adjustment on the top as shown in the manual. The The threads that hold it in are stripped out so I have no adjustment apparently it is supposed to be four turns off bottom. Runs fine at low speed no popping nothing. At high speed after adjusting timing it stops for a bit then full throttle it will start to pop. The shut off solenoid intermittently works when I move it around popping seems to stop some. I am at my wit's end with this tractor. Will this solenoid adjustment not being there cause it to pop through the intake. Or am I missing something else. Any help would be greatly appreciated thank you

Have you tried a partial choke?

If that helps or stops the popping, good chance it is too lean.

The solenoid could be the problem. It works by closing off the fuel flow through the main jet. If it is not fully retracting that could cause it. The solenoid is not necessary to run if you can find a way to remove it and plug the fitting.

If a partial choke does not solve it, check the spark quality, check the points gap, check the distributor shaft bushing for side play. It must be tight to keep the points set.

One other cause, if the popping is rhythmic, as in a constant popping back through the intake under load, that is a sign of an exhaust valve not opening. Could be a bent pushrod, flat cam, valve severely out of adjustment, too loose.

Thank you for your reply all the plugs are new. Wires points and condenser. I replaced the timing gears also didn't notice any play I am going to double check that for sure. One other question if the shut-off valve is not needed why does is say in the repair manual to have it 4 turns off bottom ??. I will check everything you mentioned. I will post the out come thanks again

coil wires hooked up to the wrong sides; hole in backside of the distributor cap. Run into both of those making the engine pop.

Well, got to poking around looking for information on the solenoid.

From what I see the solenoid can be removed BUT it must be replaced with an adjustable power jet needle.

Sorry about that!

If you suspect the solenoid is not fully retracting, it may need to be replaced or substitute the adjustable needle. Or it may just need to be backed out some to richen it up a bit.

A good way to set the power jet is to have the engine warmed up, and at slow idle, then suddenly open the throttle and listen for the response. If it stumbles, back the jet adjustment out 1/4 turn. Keep repeating the test until it will take sudden throttle without hesitation. A single puff of black smoke is desirable.

Of course this should be done only after everything else is adjusted and as best you can get it.
