For the brain trust-going to use POR-15 on some places on my dump body but have questions. Will it stick to the paint that is already there, do I need to use the prep that they sell that goes with it, and what kind of luck have you had with it. Tell me the good and bad about when you used it. Thank you for your time and knowledge. Neil

I put some on my pick-up years ago. Did the hitch and some other areas. I prepped them and all. Some of the hitch I'm betting the sunlight affected it and it flaked off in short time.
Now while I was under there my rear driveshaft was rusty. I had paint left over so without any prep or anything I just smeared some on with a brush. Now the stuff on the driveshaft held up great ! So your results will likely be different. Overall I was not impressed.

did a mower deck this fall with por-15. No prep. It's flaking off after 2 uses. I wish I'd used the prep.

Don't bother with it unless you use the prep. The prep is what really makes the difference.

I tried it on my rocker panels when I replaced them. 1 winter later it peeled off in sheets. Full disclosure, I did not use the prep.

Proper prep with any coating is important, even more so with urethanes, they are moisture cure and very sensitive to surface prep. POR-15 is also UV sensitive so it also needs a top coat properly applied to it too.

I did 2 truck frames 15ish years ago, sand blasted, etched, and properly cleaned and dried and top coated afterwards. The results were as expected, still holding.

Friend of ours painted his frame with minimal prep, pealed right off.

The smoother the surface the less likely it is to stay on. I use it on nasty rusty rims because it coats and fills the little nooks and crannies to smooth out the surface.

I've followed several discussions on truck forums bout this stuff. The impression I get, and I haven't ever used it, is that it's real finicky and either sticks and lasts or doesn't without much rhyme or reason. I'd research the crap out of it before investing.
