Derecho Cleanup Update

I lost 15 trees, mostly 20' evergreens up by the house, those are all out and burned. I had about a mile and half of fence row with downed trees of various sizes, all trees are off fences and out of fields and burnt. I have not started on my timber, but probably have 50 good sized trees to clean up, some are 4' diameter cotton woods. I have all the downed cherry from the fence rows up by the shop. There is probably 75,000 pounds of various sizes and quality logs out. I probably have another 25'000 pounds to get out of timber.

I hired an excavator to come in and clear big stuff out of fence rows. He did a good job, came in under 30 hours and reasonably priced. It cost me 1/4 of this in repairs to the skid steer I borrowed, when I got lines caught and bent them. It will cost me right at $5000 for storm cleanup, not what I wanted to spend, but not bad considering what happened.

I hope to get some tiling done yet.

Good grief and ufda! What will happen to all the tree debris Cedar Rapids is piling? There is enough there, I think, to rot for nearly 100 years. Spontaneous combustion?

You have been busy. Handling that amount of trees requires some serious machinery. I have not been in that part of the state since the wind happened but the stories have mentioned awesome damage.

I moved this today, excavator pulled out of fencerow, I hauled to Cherry pile.

Loggers here use a machine that will grab a tree cut it off and carry it anywhere, then they send it thru a chipper and sell the chips to the pulp plants or the wood burning electric plants.

Unless you have a lot of time or don't want to saw to much I would not get one of those band mills. Use an old wheel saw with a carriage. Much faster for larger or faster jobs. Dad had a guy come in with a band mill. We set the logs on with a loader and it was terrible slow. Would only be able to cut about 3 logs in an afternoon. most were only about 6-12 feet. When the blade got dull it would waver like waves on water. Change blade and fine again.
