Tractor won''t go in gear, but drives in neutral!

Hey all, I just got a New Holland 7610 4x4 with an 8x2 manual transmission with about 2200 hrs. It drove great for a day, the next day (today) when I put it in gear it will stall when I let out the clutch. But if it's in H or L (doesn't matter) and in neutral it will move forward when I let out the clutch in some pre-determined gear. Does anyone have any idea what could be going on or what/how to check? I'm sick about this wondering if the guy I bought it from new about this but didn't tell me. Waiting on my operators manual to get here but I'm afraid I may need to order a repair manual too.

Sounds like what ever gear you last had it in the shiftier popped out of the slide and it is still in that gear. Your very likely to have to pull the top of the transmission off and have a look see and get it back in neutral

Pretty common for the main shift lever ball on those to wear on the sides, and slip between the shift rails due to sloppy shifting. You will
need to take the top cover off, line up the shift rail slots in neutral. The sides of the shift ball can be brazed up slightly, and filed
smooth, to alleviate the problem. Then very carefully set the cover back on, making sure the two speed lever goes into its socket, and the
main lever goes into the shift rail slots. Put in a couple bolts, and shift it into each gear, and rock it to make sure it goes into and
comes back out of each gear. If the gasket is damaged, you can use a light coat of RTV. Or non hardening permatex.

My old ford 2000 did the same thing. Shifter ball end wore out and popped out of the slot. Bought a new one and it was a easy fix.

Once you have it repaired as Skipper II described you will ant to not shift sloppily. To shift cleanly you want to keep your side to side and front to back motions separate.

See pics above, does that yellowish fluid look normal? First
transmission I’ve gotten into so I’m not sure. I did get it back
in neutral and it’s working now but I’m still not clear how to
prevent it again. Here’s another pic

Glad it is back together.

Looks like some water in it to me, that is a lot of fluid to change, work it hard all day boil water out.

A little hard to explain but learn to shift as if you are making an H and not a U. That is come up
or down from what ever gear to the center then make side ways motion. As some has said you may have
to replace or build up the shift ball but learning HOW and taking time to shift right will help
theproblem.

jm. back in 1981 I started my distribution business with a partner. I bought to E-250s. They were economy models with standards, three on the tree. My partner was not adept at shifting a standard. He would put his whole upper body into a one motion sweep from first into second. Within a year and a half the shift tube on the column had to be replaced. In another year and a half it was gone again. I had the shop replace it with a floor shift.
